That's a vague guestimate. Research it first. SBC get's enough money that don't need to rely on telemarketing for profit.

Here's my problem: my wife regularly pulls night shift (12 hours) as a nurse. When she comes home, our youngest goes to school. My wife naps while our daughter is gone.

If she takes the phone off the hook, she couldn't answer an emergency call from the school. If she leaves the phone on, she can't sleep because of all the folks calling her to sell XYZ.

We have NEVER bought ANYTHING from a telemarketer. If I put up a "Do Not Disturb" sign on my door, wouldn't I have a right to privacy from a salesman ringing the doorbell?

Guess not - it would infringe his right to free speech...on my property and in violation of my request for quiet.

You and others seem SO upset that big brother can't come to your rescue. I'll rescue myself, thank you very much. I don't need govt in a single thing more in my life, certainly don't need them regulating who can call me, and vice versa. People and their phones, man, and I thought folks had a love affair with their cars!

Of course, WE know you like CHEESE, like all good Freepers that haven't had theirs stolen by the Moose. So, if the call had gone like this...... "Mr. Hot Dog, we have your favorite cheese at half price, how many loafs can we put you down for?" !!!!! "Vice President Cheese, my wife and weiner dog just love your cheese, and we're about out, could you deliver if we order a bakers dozen?"

So don't throw me with that mustard story. Cheese on your dog man...

So, if I could sell you a phone, that had an emergency feature, would you buy it from me? Money back guarantee to block anything that is solicitation oriented.

Is your right to quiet protected by the Constitution too?

I don't remember this judge throwing out all of the local "disturbing the peace" ordinaces?

Yep, charge the consumer so that businesses can have their bill of rights. Extortion?

That would depend on what law the ruling was based on. Will have to read it.

The First Ammendment.

I"ll jump in here too because Mr Rodgers has a similar situation to mine.

Caller ID doesn't help...once the phone rings I've been awakened. The trick is only having the phone ring for important stuff

There is already a 'do not call ' list . Look in the front of your phone book. There is a phone number to call.

I did it and it really made a difference.

We were visiting my S-I-L in Columbus, Oh this last summer.
She was being deluged with telemarketers. One Sunday it stared at 8:AM !! She got at least 5 per day.

They should be required to display caller ID.

Statement by President Bush
Thursday September 25, 7:43 pm ET

WASHINGTON, Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a statement by President Bush:

Unwanted telemarketing calls are intrusive, annoying, and all too common. When Americans are sitting down to dinner, or parents are reading to their children, the last thing they want is a call from a stranger with a sales pitch.

For that reason, I have strongly supported the actions of the Federal Trade Commission and the Federal Communications Commission to establish a National Do Not Call Registry and protect consumers.

The millions of people who have signed up for the list have the right to reduce unwanted telephone solicitations. I commend Congress for its rapid action to support the Registry, and I look forward to signing this legislation.

Last time someone told me to say cheese...I smiled...I wasn't in to mood to smile...

Besides...I had my cell phone company call me to tell me they had a "better" plan for me...all I had to do was sign up for two years...always remember...people are in business to make money...if it's too good to be true...then you can bet it's a lie
