Hamas Founder Says Bush Has Declared War on Islam

GAZA (Reuters) - Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, founder of the Islamic militant group Hamas, emerged from hiding on Wednesday and denounced President Bush's speech to the United Nations as a declaration of war on Islam.

"Today Bush declares war on Islam under the pretext of terrorism and ideologies that feed terrorism. Bush views Islam as terrorism," the wheelchair-bound cleric, 64, told reporters at a mosque in the Gaza Strip (news - web sites).

Yassin has been in hiding because of Israeli missile strikes against Hamas leaders after a wave of suicide bombings.

Hamas is sworn to the destruction of Israel, Washington's closest Middle East ally, and has killed hundreds of Israelis in suicide attacks.

"Bush must understand that religious people do not fear threats. Islam is stronger than Bush's regime, stronger than Bush and stronger than his state and Islam will win."

He said Bush had resorted to war after failing to conduct a dialogue with Muslims. "But he will be defeated, in Afghanistan, in Iraq, in Palestine and in all the Muslim land," he said.

Bush said in his U.N. address Tuesday that the Palestinian cause was being "betrayed by leaders who cling to power by feeding old hatreds."

"We will not surrender, we will not raise white flags and we will continue to fight until we achieve either victory or martyrdom," said Yassin, who was slightly wounded in one strike.

Yassin said Hamas opposed any truce with Israel, although Palestinian President Yasser Arafat wants a cease-fire. "Talking truces is completely rejected by our side now," he said.

Yassin also said Hamas would not take part in any Palestinian government. "We do not share in governments under (Israeli) occupation," he said.

Yassin said Hamas was in contact with the Lebanese guerrilla group Hizbollah over a possible prisoner swap deal with Israel.

A Palestinian newspaper said Tuesday Israel could free 215 Palestinian security detainees next week as part of a prisoner-swap deal with Hizbollah.

"From our side we work and are in contact with Hizbollah to release as many Palestinian prisoners as possible from the jails of the Israeli enemy," Yassin said.

I don't wish to repeat myself, but a bit of repetition is necessary. My screen name indicates that I am related to a Muslim, but I reiterate that I side completely with the US and our allies, especially the Israelis. I have no bias towards Islam; at best it is a false and pernicious religion. I believe that we are in the right morally, and that the various suicide and other attacks that started long before 9/11/2001 are in the wrong morally. These attacks are merely another proof of the bitter fruit of that evil religion. So, I fully support a war against terror and against anyone or any group, nation, or international ideology that supports it, e.g., Militant Islam. However, I estimate that only about 1% of all Muslims are militants or terrorists, and I believe that it's prudent not to throw out the baby with the bath water. In fact, it's more than prudent, it is the moral thing to do. We stand in grave danger of losing our own moral compass, indeed, even our very souls, if we strike out at all Muslims indiscriminately in either vigilante or mob fashion. In other words, perhaps because I am related to some non-militant Muslims I am taking the time to write this cautionary message and post it to this influential website, but I hope that I would feel the same way if I wasn't related to any Muslims. I hope that all good people everywhere share my basic sentiment, i.e., it's wrong to punish the innocent, and it's wrong to resort to vigilante or mob action. Certainly, all good citizens and legal aliens should report all suspicious acts to the authorities. Those Muslims and others who observe suspicious acts or who acquire other vital information about terrorist plots, but who merely stand by and do nothing, are complicit with the militants and terrorists, and should be prosecuted and deported as the law dictates. If this includes my relatives, so be it. But, please, let the law do it, not mobs. That's all I ask. Thank you.

Maybe it's extreme age or physical problems causing his deficiency in reason. He equates the eradication of godless, immoral terrorists with an attack on a religion. Of course an attack on a religion would not be carried out with physical weapons, but with spiritual weapons, and there is no such attack. A recommendation for this case is that he reduce the amount of gunpowder he uses to spice up his fruit juice.

The koran of islam says to kill all infidels or become martyrs trying to do so; islamics are daily proving that this is what they are trying to do. So what are they complaining about?

If the US has declared war on the murderous pondscum of islam, that just makes it easier for them to be martyrs and go see allah. They should be praising us for this, not complaining about it!

I agree with your post, but I think muslims from around the world, not only the US, should be loudly denouncing militant Islam. It would go along way towards solving their own problems as well. Until then they cannot be trusted.
