A very dark day for music....sigh.
Johnny Cash was one of my musical heros along with the Carter Family.
I bet Heaven is hearing some sweet songs about now, and Johnny and June are together again in God's choir.
Thank you for all the great music Johnny!

Best song lyrics:
My name is Sue,
How do you do?
now you're gonna die!
I hit him hard right between the eyes
and he went down, but to my suprise,
He come up with a knife and cut off a piece of my ear.
So, I busted a chair right across his teeth,
And we crashed through the bar and in to street,
Kickin' and gougin' in the blood and the dust and the beer.......

I saw Johnny Cash perform only once but it was impressive. He had an amazing stage presence. We are fortunate to have shared time on earth with Johnny Cash.

I always loved Cash's rendition of 'Peace in the Valley.'
Well, I'm tired and so weary
But I must go along
Till the lord comes and calls me away
Where the morning's so bright
And the Lamb is the light
And the night is as bright as the day, oh yes...
There will be peace in the valley for me some day
There will be peace in the valley for me, oh Lord, I pray
There'll be no sadness, no sorrow, no trouble I see
There will be peace in the valley for me...

That song is going to be running through my head all day now...
Johnny Cash had one of those voices you couldn't mistake for anyone else's.
I saw him in a TV movie once. He was quite a good actor.

Wreck of the old 97 remains a favorite - as do a number of others.
God bless you both Johnny & June and thanks for the memories
To: Fraulein
Thanks for posting that -- I've never heard it. It's beautiful.

Johnny Cash started out about the same time, and with the same record label, as Roy Orbison and Elvis Presley.
Lots of hard living and fast times, Johnny probably was living on borrowed time for quite a while.
And with the recent passing of Bob Hope, I guess you could say, we now have no Cash and no Hope.
But Jerry Lee Lewis just goes on and on.

Now that is bad news...poorman will be unhappy to hear about it.
Crud.
RIP Johnny Cash...

It's a beautiful song (that was just a shortened excerpt). You really should hear it. It's amazing. (Elvis also did a version of it)

Shel Silverstein wrote those lyrics I believe.

Whoever has a link to "That Ragged Old Flag" that they posted a few months ago, would you please post it again?

I just "discovered" Johnny Cash a few months ago and have really enjoyed his music, my favorite being "Hurt" (the video is *so* moving!) After June died, I knew he wouldn't last a year, so this was not unexpected.
Re: A Boy Named Sue. As a young girl named Sue in the 60s, I was NOT fond of that song! Every time I was introduced by someone by my parents, the first thing out of their mouth was "My name is Sue! How do you do!"

Well you wonder why I always dress in black
Why you never see bright colors on my back
And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone
Well there's a reason for the things that I have on
I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down
Livin' in the hopeless hungry side of town
I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime
But is there because he's a victim of the times
I wear the black for those who've never read
Or listened to the words that Jesus said
About the road to happiness through love and charity
Why you'd think he's talking straight to you and me
Well we're doin' mighty fine I do suppose
In our streak of lightning cars and fancy clothes
But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back
Up front there oughta be a man in black
I wear it for the sick and lonely old
For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold
I wear the black in morning for the lives that could have been
Each week we lose a hundred fine young men
And I wear it for the thousands who have died
Believin' that the Lord was on their side
I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died
Believin' that we all were on their side
Well there's things that never will be right I know
And things need changin' everywhere you go
But till we start to make a move to make a few things right
You'll never see me wear a suit of white
Oh I'd love to wear a rainbow every day
and tell the world that everything's okay
But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back
Till things're brighter I'm the man in black

When I was growing up in Nashville, in the ;ate '60s/early '70s: Johnny Cash had a network television show, somewhere along that time.
My mother was one of the head staff at Nashville's primary institution for retarded adults, at that point (place called "Cloverbottom"); and I clearly recall that -- each and every week, without fail -- Johnny Cash would provide [xxx] number of free studio seats, during show tapings, for as many of the "kids" as my mother and the rest of her staff could bring down to the studio.
I usually tagged along... and I got to see live performances by Cash himself (obviously); the Everly Brothers; a barely teenage Tanya Tucker; Jerry Lee Lewis: Loretta Lynn; Glen Campbell; and any other number of great music stars of the day.
I've always remembered Johnny Cash fondly, for that incredible kindness he showed those born so terribly disadvantaged. The man was... was...
... well: he was just a real man, is all. The kind they (tragically) simply don't make much anymore, these days.
Rest In Peace, Man In Black.
