My mother was one of the head staff at Nashville's primary institution for retarded adults, at that point (place called "Cloverbottom"); and I clearly recall that -- each and every week, without fail -- Johnny Cash would provide [xxx] number of free studio seats, during show tapings, for as many of the "kids" as my mother and the rest of her staff could bring down to the studio.
I usually tagged along... and I got to see live performances by Cash himself (obviously); the Everly Brothers; a barely teenage Tanya Tucker; Jerry Lee Lewis: Loretta Lynn; Glen Campbell; and any other number of great music stars of the day.
I've always remembered Johnny Cash fondly, for that incredible kindness he showed those born so terribly disadvantaged. The man was... was...
... well: he was just a real man, is all. The kind they (tragically) simply don't make much anymore, these days.
Rest In Peace, Man In Black.
