California GOP Insiders: McClintock Will Drop Out Eric Leonard, NewsMax.com Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003 LOS ANGELES Leading elected Republicans have made it clear for the first time the party will stand behind only one candidate in the recall election to ensure a victory over Democrat Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante. Neither state Sen. Tom McClintock's nor Arnold Schwarzenegger's campaigns say they are considering dropping out of the race, but results from the most recent Field Poll, coupled with GOP pressure, point towards McClintock being asked to "take one for the team," insiders say.
"I believe we're going to have one candidate," said Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., during an appearance today on CNN.
He said the party's decision would likely be made during the state's Republican Party convention this weekend in Southern California.
"I'm going to the convention to bring the party together. I'm confident we're going to get to one candidate," Issa said.
Hours earlier, California Republican Party chairman Duf Sundheim made similar comments during an interview on Fox News Channel.
While McClintock has been more closely aligned with the Republican Party's traditional philosophies, Schwarzenegger continues to lead with voters, according to the most recent Field Poll.
The poll revealed little change in voter support now that Peter Ueberroth, a Republican who said he was running as an independent, quit the race.
With Ueberroth out, Schwarzenegger went from 25 to 27 percent, McClintock from 13 to 14 percent, and Bustamante from 30 to 32 percent.
However, with McClintock out, Schwarzenegger vaults into the lead over Bustamante.

Bust-a-move is term-limited out in 04, I believe. Just in time for McClintock to serve during Arnold's second (And first full) term.
And then onto the Govenorship with him. With a REAL chance to win. Not this beyond his WILDEST dream he's been having the last few weeks.

Yes, I understand that. Do you understand that it's a two-edged sword? My point is not that voters won't have the opportunity to vote for McClintock regardless of what happens at this point; it's that the Republican leadership will have put all their eggs (the ones destined for their faces under this scenario) into Arnold's basket instead of helping the true conservative take his best shot.

Whoops...Make that 06, not 04.

The more he says he will not drop out, the more pressure on the AS camp. The deals will come to a head this weekend. Lets hope the decisions made are good for the State, and all here concerned.

Excuse my language, but what in the h*** is this about??!!
Well it maybe about the fact that McClintock doesn't look like he's doing that well among Republican voters based upon internals from the following three polls .......
Republican Voters Schwarzenegger McClintock
CA Field Poll 43% 28%
USA Survey Poll 56% 25%
CA C of C Poll 44% 23%

Have they accused him of smoking, yet?
Seriously, though, his alleged use of the "n" word in competition hasn't been fully exploited yet. Granted, it amounts to horrendous hypocrisy for them to use that as an attack given Bustamante's more recent use of it; however, inconsistency and hypocrisy have never tended to bother libs much. One problem is that they haven't yet had the opportunity to hurl those accusations at him in the context of a widely-watched debate. By the time the one takes place that Arnold has agreed to, he's left himself virtually no time to rehabilitate himself from that; and you can bet that would be the first time a lot of voters (the Entertainment Tonight bloc) would find out about those tidbits.

I'm not sure what's driving Drudge on this, but the 26 year old stories left me flat. I may not like some of the things Arnold stands for, but I like "NOTHING AT ALL" that Bustamante stands for.
Bustamante is racist separatist. Tell me what trumps that? I haven't seen it yet and I doubt I will. It would have to be something like treason or murder.

Don't want you getting your mouse all dirty. heh That only happens when I look for pictures of Jaime Pressly or Niki Taylor.
But perhaps I've shared too much...

Yeah, about the same amount of support they've given to other conservative republicans over the past ten years. And Arnold supporters will be every bit as eager to support him then as they are now.
Psst. They don't LIKE conservatives.
Get out the Justin Timberlake a listen to "Cry Me a River"
Feel better? No? I bet you every Republican in the state that voted, voted for McClintock last election, and he still lost. That's one thing about McClintock supporters, there not very good at math. Suuure.. It's cause no other Republican's vote for him.. Riiiight.

I don't get this whole no new taxes pledge crap?! What do you think that a "pledge" is actually going to do.
Bob Riley, Governor of Alabama gave a pledge and look what's happening to him.
I think a pledge is nothing but hot air. You need to look at the persons overall outlook and views on taxes. Arnold has the right outlook and views and that is, is that Californians are being gouged by the state on taxes and that he intends to make sure that the unconstitutional taxe increases that have been instated are repealed and that no new taxes are levied that will hinder economic growth in California. Which is the main goal of his campaign.
Arnold knows that increased taxes do not attract bussinesses nor does it inspire growth. I respect his honest position that barring an emergency (e.g. major natural disaster or terrorist attack) that he will not institute a tax increase.
It's that simple and straight forward think that I support in Arnold. Not some worthless "Tax-pledge". Pfft!

Can you say mega bucks, mega appearances by Pres Bush and Arnold along with more Administration/Senators/RNC folks than you can count would be out campaigning for McClintock! Look around here on FR. How much is the conservative getting here? He'll get the same against Boxer. When a more "attractive" candidate "who can win" comes along, people will abandon their principles. He'll get squat. Disgusting.
To: A Broken Glass Republican
Yes, but he still serves until 2004 no matter who is elected governor, unless it's him. Then the new governor appoints a successor, I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong, please!
To: Tempest; kidd
Bob Riley made the pledge, Jeb Bush didn't.
Guess which one HASN'T raised taxes?

I called the head of the San Diego GOP and asked him why I should give them money and my time if they don't have the guts to back up one candidate. He told me it was against the law to back a candidate...huh?
