Anyone remember the name of the UofM football announcer who would go bonkers whenever Michigan scored?

Bob Ufer. Lived across the street from my Grandparents in Ann Arbor. Big house on a triangle lot.

I remember that. I remember Bobby Hull hitting the Wings' goalie in the face with a slap shot. Knocked him cold and cut his face wide open, right through the Freddie mask.

If you remember when hockey players didn't wear helmets, and blocked pucks with their faces....

heh yea and the sad thing is...it you can still get a face shot bloody even with cages/sheilds you get hit hard enough the impact splits your skin (i play hockey myself took 2 pucks to my face to wear a face visor)

Do you remember the park that was in the opposite
direction of Bob Lo? I believe it was on Harson's Island
and you could only get there by ferry. Freighters used to pass that park carrying the ore, etc., from the north
sailing across Lakes Superior, Huron, St. Clair and the
Detroit River to the plants at River Rouge, etc.
And, if I remember correctly there was an island across
from said park that belonged to a tribe of Indians.

I remember the park had a Merry-Go-Round, Roller Rink and
plenty of picnic areas. I think there were pony rides too.
I just can't remember the name!

Harson's island was up the St Clair river and next to and island called Russel island which is the Indian island.
I used to live in Algonac right across from there and the Indians would walk across the ice in the winter, drink in the bars and get get stranded sometimes because they waited too long and the river was uncrossable.
The freighters would use the channel and when they came out the north end and up the river the wash would draw the water from the other side of the river. We could wade out 30, 40, 50 feet and wait for the water to rush back. Usually when they were loaded though. The Bethlehem steel ships were the best.

Never had a Sloppy Joe at Sander's.... It was a place I got taken to fo a reward after a doctor's appointment ( I had a lot of surgery as a kid) or after the all-important Back To School shopping at Hudson's downtown. ( Right across the street! ) So I do not believe I evr had more than a dessert at Sander's!

Heard all sorts of bad stories about Tim Allen.....LOL!

Oh yes, I remember the riots clearly. I was eight, and we walked to the end of the street to Woodward and watched Detroit burn... and smelled it.

....btw, you mentioned Hudson's and it reminded me of the day we got all dressed up and went downtown to get my communion dress. There I was in my best clothes and my first time on an elevator which was stuffed with people and what happens? Just about half way up, I threw up Hot Dog all over everyone.

....I still can't ride in a elevator with out thinking about it and laughing. You should have seen the look on their faces as they tried to find something to wipe themselves off with!

GrandMom, my mom tells a similar story. She, her mother and grandmother drove to Hudson's to buy her school clothes. When they got downtown (from Pontiac) my mom threw up all over herself. Apparently, they stopped at Himelhoch's, bought a new dress, then went on to Hudson's.
