Poll Names McClintock as Winner of the Debate

State Senator Tom McClintock came out on top in a poll that gauged public reaction to Wednesday's candidate debate.

A News10/SurveyUSA poll found that 30 percent of California voters felt McClintock won the debate. Twenty-two percent of those questioned said Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante was number one, while 12 percent named Peter Ueberroth as the winner. Arianna Huffington was favored by nine percent of those surveyed, while three percent said Peter Camejo won.

As evidence that the election is still very much up for grabs, the survey found 24 percent of voters either undecided about the winner of the debate or with no favorite.

The poll showed that Arnold Schwarzenegger's decision to skip the debate may have been costly. Fifty-five percent of voters felt it was the wrong thing to do, while 37 percent approved of the actor's absence. Eight percent had no opinion.

According to the survey, Gov. Gray Davis' half-hour appearance prior to the debate may not have improved his chances of avoiding recall. About a third of those surveyed, 36 percent, said the question-and-answer session caused their opinion of Davis to fall. Seventeen percent came away from the telecast with a better impression of the governor, while 46 percent said their opinion was unchanged.

,

The poll questioned 1,444 registered California voters in the hours immediately following the debate. Margin of error for the survey is %.1 percent.

I have developed a mental 'bozo filter' for some of these posts. I just cruise right on by now without flinching

Not me, I gotta punch em back once in awhile. ;-)

Found the site but not the article. It's not on AP's site either. Could it have been UPI? I'm amazed it was only in the print newspaper.

I'm searching LA Times right now. There's something about contributions I need to check out.

With all due respect, I think one has to question a poll that isn't willing to publish its numbers.

Not to mention its methodology, whose paying the freight for the poll, etc.

Another non-story for the silly season.

"If 37% believed Arnold did the right thing by staying away, and 30% think McClintock won the debate, who has the most support?"

Good point! And that survey was most likely done BEFORE Arnold was interviewed on tv explaining why he skipped the debate. Arnold said there was a parents' meeting at his daughter's school and he put that ahead of an early debate.

Well, speekinout, let me tell ya why that is...

First we had elected representation, then we got the ballot measure process, then we got political correctness and leftist media domination and finally, political consultants/handlers/PR "experts."

Then at the same time we got career politicians and then pensions for public officials along with citizens with apathy settin in, so we got term limits on the ballot, but they've found ways around that.

So then we git "citizen politicians" like Ross Perot, Jesse Ventura and now Arnold Schwarzenegger and a whole raft of citizens on the Recall ballot.

Now, to keep this short, politicians have become blander and blander so they don't upset anybody so they can vest their pensions, so they don't really DO anything, right? They don't dare and we get bores like Gray Davis on the left and yes, like Tom, on the right... blander than heck!!!

The people, meanwhile, sit on their asses and watch Celebrity Justice, Entertainment Tonight and SPORTS, right? Then all of a sudden the electeds, who long ago delegated most all of their authority to bureaucrats who also hire consultants galore to cover their asses, get caught in tryin to buy too many votes with too many programs with a sudden drop in their "revenue stream" since all their "programs" are driving business into the dang ground.

Now, all this time, guys like Tom can't even get 10 second sound bites on the six o'clock news (which has become liberal entertainment instead of actual "news") and can only find enough conservative Repellicans out in the rural areas to listen to his warnings at the Republican Womens Luncheon where they're planning their next group trip to shop at Nordstrom's, right?

So... All of a sudden, when what Tom's been yelling at the top of his non-amplified (acoustic is all conservatives ever git) lungs suddenly starts happening... And somebody actually funds a Recall qualification effort and people who have to be paid start gathering signatures because all the volunteers are down in the city shopping at Nordstrom's instead...

All of a sudden, here come the Celibrity Opportunist who hasn't said much, to jump on this exciting new bandwagon and bump the slogging conservative off the stage because he supposedly has no chance to win because he hasn't had theatrical training which is danged important to get the attention of those watching Celebrity Justice, Entertainment Tonight, etc...

So then, we get what Minnesoda got. Another Jesse Ventura style "citizen politician" who has never actually had to get anything past the grinding process in the Crapitol, or implemented through the beligerent bureaucrazy that must deal with the civil service system and the government employees union who bich as a way of life!!!

By the time the "citizen politician" steps on enough toes to actually get anything done, the activists, lobbyists, unionist, consumerists, environmentalists, to say nothing of the opposing party and their media suck-ups will shine their spotlighting spin machine on your charismatic celibrity hero and make him miss the entertainment world so badly that he will only serve one term!

Then the whole thing will go immediately back to what it was before and the people that DID actually get involved will have won a very hollow victory, indeed! At least Tom's insider knowledge will give him a chance to spring into action and surgically carve away at the grotesque fat because he knows up close and personal, right where it's at!!!

He could even be better than Reagan, who at least studied the situation before jumping into the race with his charisma. Yes, Tom needs help with theatrics and needs to smile more and stop coming off as dour, or so intense, but yet, maybe that's what the people want right now is someone who's not going to be constantly playing to the press and the cameras and getting our governmental engine "leaned out" and hitting on 4 cylinders, even if there used to be 8!!!

"people who have to be paid start gathering signatures because all the volunteers are down in the city shopping at Nordstrom's instead"

Everything in your post is right on except the above. The volunteers would have gotten all the necessary sigantures since they did turn in over 600,000 even after slacking off because of Issa's funding of paid volunteers.

When Issa came in with the money he assured the July deadline would be easilly met. Without him the volunteers might have made the deadline but it would have been tough.

I'll be voting for Tom in the election no matter what the supporters here say and push for the empty suit liberal Arnold. He's already said that he wants to bring back business so the state will have more taxes to fund social programs. What we need is less taxes, less social programs, and 100,000+ fewer state employees.

You are absolutely correct, Sir!!! I took a little liberty with the whole truth in the interest of keep my rant short, not distracting everyone with too many details due to my theatrical training. See how it works until the few, such as you, come along and restore the whole truth to it's proper perspective. Thank you!

I got my HISTORIC sample ballot today and my vote is so precious that I too will not "waste" it on someone who may enjoy chasing cars, but will have too many advisors to rapidly determine which wheels need peeing on!!!

You received no answer EV? Cannot understand that coming from one with such well declared principles. Well, ping me if you do -- that may signal that it's finally time to consider booking a ski-weekend in Hades.

Just curious? Where are the candidates listed on yours, wondering if they are all the same.

On mine, Arnold is #2 and Tom is #136, that sucks!

I'm going to start a thread on it tomorrow. I was nosing around the SOS site and found a couple of other things which seem questionable.

tb, I never found that article but I will keep an eye on the SOS site. Hellman's name is listed there and any contributions should be recorded.

The T-S never puts AP or UPI stories on the web site. One other clue is the dateline is Sacramento. Could it have been from the SAc Bee ?

They are rotated in each congressional district in the state. They had some kind of "drawing" to determine the order, then, because of some judicial ruling in the recent past, they must then rotate them in each of the districts.

The judge ruled that ballot position really is important!

The worst thing is Tom's position statement is being left off the ballot pamphlet, due to his not complying with the contribution limits under some new law. His campaign blew that one and it really hurts. I don't know whether he's appealing the decision, or not. Doesn't matter as it will be too late to beat the presses anyway. What a shame!!!
