We get 20% of our imported oil from Nigeria.

Yup. We have no national interest in being there... seeing as how we get 20% of our oil from there. No interests at all...

Nigerian Oil Pipeline Ruptures, Explodes
By DULUE MBACHU
ASSOCIATED PRESS

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) - Crude oil spilling from a ruptured Shell Oil pipeline burst into flames near a southeastern Nigerian village, scorching yam fields and spreading thick, black smoke for miles, residents and activists said Monday.

Residents of Gio, 40 kilometers east of Nigeria's oil city of Port Harcourt, said they first learned of the spill when they awoke to an explosion early Friday and saw flames leaping from the pipe.

Shell workers raced to the scene to extinguish the blaze but were denied access by angry villagers demanding compensation for the spill, a company spokesman said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Company officials were negotiating with the community to repair the leak, the spokesman said.

Ledum Mitee, leader of the activist Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People, told The Associated Press the flames had died down but that rolling smoke made it difficult for nearby residents to breathe.

Crude was also flowing into nearby streams, polluting drinking water, Mitee said.

Since 1993, Shell has suspended drilling in violence-prone Ogoniland as a result of protests by villagers who accuse the oil giant and the Nigerian government of colluding to cheat them of oil royalties.

Shell pipelines continue to transport crude through Ogoniland, a region with 500,000 people in Nigeria's swampy southern Niger Delta.

The cause of the latest spill has not been determined. Nigerian authorities say between 200,000 and 300,000 barrels of crude - more than one-tenth of Nigeria's exports - are stolen daily by criminal rings who syphon the fuel from pipelines using everything from buckets to sophisticated pumps.

Mitee blamed the spill on corroding pipelines that have not been maintained since Shell's pullout.

Nigeria is Africa's leading oil producer and the fifth-biggest supplier of U.S. oil imports.

Wonder if it has resulted in any dramatic effect on that country's number one business activity, "investment solicitation" email?

DEAR SIR:CONDITIONS IN NIGERIA OIL PIPELINES HAVE NECESSITATED A REVIEW OF OUR INVESTMENT PORTFLIOS IN THE NIGERIAN FINANCE INDUSTRY, AND WE ARE RELOCATING SOME ASSETS TO THE UNITED STATES.

They say in Iraq we would need a soldier stationed every few meters to protect the pipelines. Maybe Shell should hire an army in Nigeria.

It could be worse. Luckily, earlier this year, spam e-mails surpassed oil as the chief export of Nigeria.

Please, help these poor rich people get their millions out of the country!

Maybe I can use this as leverage when I buy my SUV in three weeks.

But it might drive the price of crude oil up over $32 a gallon. Should know in an hour or two when my usual quote sources reopen. If the price doesn't spike up I would question the significance of this news.

This gas price thing remains of an old jazz song. The bear missed the train, the bear missed the train and now he's walking.
