WASHINGTON (CNN) --With one recent poll showing actor Arnold Schwarzenegger falling behind Democratic Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante in California's gubernatorial recall race, some top Republicans are urging other GOP candidates to drop out of the race.

Businessman Bill Simon, the GOP nominee against Gov. Gray Davis last year, dropped out over the weekend. But Republican state Sen. Tom McClintock says he's in the race for good. McClintock, in Sacramento, California, spoke with CNN's Judy Woodruff on Tuesday. The following is an edited transcript.

I love your committment to conservative ideas!! And your defeatist attitude. That is probably why the CA GOP does so well.

I give Arnold 5 days in office before he raises taxes. Another 10 before his other liberal policies start rolling out.

Even if you're sitting with an illegal immigrant, an abortion doctor, and a gay couple and their adopted kid?

Lot's of opportunity for change. I only see upside.

Phone booths are lonely places to be. But they make a nice perch to watch the parade go by.

It is quite clear that you care little about conservatism and a lot about the "R". Just remember, you get what you pay for!!

"I would rather the victory of some of my policies than the defeat of all of them." -- Abraham Lincoln, 1848

My emphasis on defeating Cruz Bustamante shows that I care about conservatism more than you do.

A vote for Arnold is a vote for higher taxes and social liberalism.

Shockingly, we agree.

Cathryn, are you really only 20 years old? That explains alot...and I don't mean that in a bad way.

That's a loaded statement! I turned 20 June 11. Yeah, I'm really only 20. LOL

I'm not going to tell you how many times I had to retake algebra in high school. It wasn't pretty.

At least you made mention of the fact that I'm a true conservative. Thanks!

Again, which policy, exactly, do you believe Arnold supports that would allow you to claim victory. You can't say tax cuts - he isn't really supporting those and won't defenitely promise anything but the car tax. You can't say not increasing taxes - he won't rule out a tax raise. You can't say cutting spending - he won't say what spending he will cut, if any, and he has previously campaigned for new spending programs. You can't say stoping illegals from sucking off the gov't teat - he has stated he would never support taking education away from an illegal (and I would imagine, this would apply to health care as well, etc.). You can't say social issues - he is for abortion and for homosexuals.

So, for what conservative policy exactly will an Arnold victory be? Defeating one liberal in favor of another is NOT a conservative policy victory - no matter how hard you try to spin it.

Even as McClintock moves up in the polls, and Arnold down, the Arnold supporters refuse to even think about supporting an actual conservative, while demanding that the McClintock supporters abandond an actual conservatives. I'm not sure how the "moderates" rationalize this, aside from the magic "R".

McClintock announced he was running for Governor way before Arnold got his Marching orders to run (Interesting how Arnold had told all his aides etc, he was not going to run. He was even heading out to announce his backing of his good friend, than all of a sudden out of nowhere, he decides to run) Oh yea, this man definately knows his mind. He definately know how to stay on track..... Anyway so how is it that McClintock is the spoiler in all of this? Hmmmmm

I just wanted to see if you could ever make a logical argument. You're vote for Arnold is the real vote for Cruz, and you know it, which is why you are getting so upset. Join the conservatives. We have a winning message.

Isn't it amazing how the backers of Arnold keep telling us we are throwing our votes to Cruz etc, when not one can give any good reason as to why Arnold is better qualified than he can get the vote because it is a liberal. Unh??? and they say we are throwing away the vote...Why don't they go ahead since they are almost there with Arnold and just vote for the democrat. What is the Democrat's Motto - Do whatever you have to to win....

Everyone is forgetting what the RECALL IS ALL ABOUT. It was NOT SO WE COULD REPLACE ONE LIBERAL WITH ANOTHER ONE...whether it be Buza whaever and Arnold.
