LA Times (Registration Required) ^ | August 24, 2003 | staff writer

Much of (Arnolds) strategy is based on cross over appeal to non-Republican voters given his comparitvely moderate views on issues such as gun control, abortion and gay rights.

But less than two weeks into his first run for elected office, Schwarznegger has already become a politically polarizing figure.

Roughly seven in ten Democratic voters have an unfavorable impression of the action-movie star, while the same number of likely Republican voters expressed a favorable view.

The actor won the support of 39% of likely Republican voters, 20% of Independents, and 7% of Democrats polled.

McClintock recieved 21% of the Republican vote, Simon recieved 12% and Uberroth 10%.

Medscribe YOU ARE SO IGNORANT. McClintock was THE leading vote-getter for the GOP last year in California, pulling in more than 100,000 votes than Simon even though Tom was running for a down-ticket position. You, FairOpinion, Hillary's Lovely Legs and the rest of the Arnold crowd deserve a LIB who despised the GOP for the Clinton impeachment. What a wooze -- that's Arnold.

I'm sorry if Arnold supporters are harassing you. I actually feel McClintock would be a better governor. I just don't feel he can both be elected and govern effectively, yet. That's why I'm hoping for Gov. Arnold with budget/finance director McClintock initially, THEN 8 years of Gov. McClintock (who is only 47).

No. McClintok needs to stay in the race.

He needs to show how liberal arnie and bustamente are the same. He needs to get the message out that it's ok to vote for a conservative.

He needs to challenge california to loose the "anyone but a conservative" attitude. After all, that attitude led to re-electing Davis and the people now see how that attitude hurt the State.

It's an excellent opportunity to soften up the public in it's unfounded hate for conservatives in that State.

I would run this platform and also get the message out that if you want to elect Swartznegger or Bustamonte, you might s well not recall Davis.

If it's the LA Times you can take three things to the bank.

1) Arnie is leading Cruz.

2) Arnie has a stronger lead over Tom than is reported.

3) LA Times polls are shamelessly manipulated to promote a liberal agenda.

McClintock - GET OUT of the race!

Premature.

McClintock/Simon have 33% of Republicans. Schwarzenegger 39%.

The difference is not huge.

Schwarzenegger trails Bustamante by a wide margin. His numbers are a bit more than Simon + McClintock.

I'm actually thinking Ueberroth may be the one who can beat the Dems.

>>But these folks won't vote for McClintock, I guarantee it. They could very well vote for Arnold however.

McClintock needs to run on a message of tolerance for Conservatives. THe state needs a real lecture on how having an "anybody but a conservative" has already hurt the State. It's what caused Davis to be elected.

Now is the window of opportunity to get this message out!

This will help with the two bigger prizes, the Senate seats of Boxhead and Frakenstein.

Folks this is all a part of a vast left wing conspiracy. First the Times has a poll showing the recall is virtually tied with just 50% favoring and now they come up with a poll showing Cruz leading Arnold by 13%. This poll is counter to the other polls I have seen. These other polls show the recall winning easily and replacement for Gray being very close. Obviously the libs and their cronies in the media want the average voter to think the recall is close and that Cruz is going to win. I will say this, with only one Dem in the race the GOP needs to settle on one candidate or it is going to be very hard for the GOP to win governor's race.

I agree with you, the last poll I saw was Arnold leading statewide 23-18 over Cruz and McClintock surging to 12% in his own internals..

I will go with those numbers until I hear different from non-LA Times sources

Isn't Arnold a Rat in sheeps clothes?

There is no major difference between him and Davis from what I can see.

"OK, so, if McClintock can't, how is it Arnie can with the same legislature? I mean, they're both republicans, RIGHT?"

I don't expect Arnold to be very effective, but he wont spend useless effort on things like anti-abortion.

What he MAY be able to get through are things like mass transit.

Without a pre-concieved adgenda that is in opposition to the legislature, he will be free to persue good and effective ideas from any corner.
Hopefully Tom will want to be one of those corners rather then flame out.

What is your opinion of Rohrabacher and Dreier supporting Schwarzenegger from day one, with enthusiasm?

Veronica.

I was willing to give McClintock a chance. THEN I saw him on Fox News Live today (Sunday after noon with Tony Snow) --

All McClintock did was BASH, over and over and over, every Republican in California going back 15 years. He bashed Wilson. He bashed US Rep. David Dreier, he bashed the Schwarznegger advisors, all of them. He bashed ALL Republicans who don't think exactly like himself.

Yet he refused (or didn't) to bash Cruz or Davis for some reason.

That is not the type of Republican that will attract many friends or supporters. Is he a tough conservative? Yes. But he is way too abrasive, and seems obsessed with slamming fellow GOPers than the Dems.

I think McClintock has lost sight of the real political enemy in this race.

I live here and I'm tired of the RINO (Arnold) and his fellow RINO's here on FreeRepublic. Rush is right and the Freepers who support Arnold will eat it if by some chance Arnold wins. You bet I have nerve. Thanks.

Two months is a long time in a political campaign. Keep in mind at one time in the last California primary for Governor, Bill Simon had 9% and the annointed Dick Riordan had 49%. Two months later Simon won the nomination and Riordan was toast. Once people got to know the frontrunner, it was all over but the shouting.

Now I'm not saying that the same thing will happen to Arnold, but it's not inconceivable. Arnold does offer a much different dynamic to this race and is far less divisive than Riordan.

Right now people are hungry for a win. That's why right now Arnold is pulling higher numbers than the true conservative. People have been conditioned to accept this media darling as our one and only chance. Time will tell if Republicans will jump on the Arnold bandwagon or think of this campaign as a joke.

The screwed up part about this recall is you can NO on the recall part and still vote on the second part. That gives Cruz a huge advantage with the hardcore democrats who are more concerned about the party than they are about the state. I know some of them and their hatred of conservatives rules their voting. It is a major flaw in the recall provision.
