Equal justice under the law means, justice will be meted out even though the law has failed to do its duty.

Well there is a cynical view. Nonetheless convicts dispensing justice is as much of a threat to society as justice going gayly blind.

Not cynical at all. It is a fact that the law and the church did nothing to this man for years. Justice has been meted out.
