HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Aug. 22 -- Arnold Schwarzenegger stopped at a sidewalk cafe here in Surf City to chat today with a few local business owners, then strolled along Main Street. More than 1,000 people rushed to the scene to watch.

They climbed trees. They stood atop cars, lined balconies, stopped downtown traffic and nearly overwhelmed his security detail.

It was the first time Schwarzenegger took his celebrity gubernatorial campaign to the streets, and bedlam erupted.

Even before his appearance today, Republican leaders had begun pressuring other GOP candidates running in the state's Oct. 7 recall election to drop out and clear the field for the actor. That campaign intensified after the response Schwarzenegger received here.

I can't believe a veteran Freeper like yourself would post something you know to be untrue.

(1) Arnold is not about to increase taxes.

(2) The others in the Republican field have absolutely no chance of winning. (this is California, the de facto capital of liberalism)

(3) The libs have to be enjoying this because they (correctly) see us divided and that leaves the door open for Bustamonte to win.

A vote for Ahnold is a vote for higher taxes.

"We must have a constitutional spending cap and must immediately attack operating deficits head on," Mr. Schwarzenegger told a ballroom packed with reporters at the Westin Hotel near Los Angeles International Airport.

"Does that mean we are going to make cuts?" he said. "Yes. Does this mean education is on the table? No.
Does this mean I am willing to raise taxes? No.
Additional taxes are the last burden we need to put on the backs of the citizens and businesses of California."

So why do you say he's going to raise taxes?
No flame intended.

Agree. What the stories don't say is that Arnold doesn't walk the streets among "The People" ever. If he wasn't running for governor the same thing would happen.

Is that what it has come to? McClintock supporters must now stoop to comparing Arnold to hitler? DISGRACEFUL. You all should join the Gray Davis team. He's doing his darndest to paint Arnold with his father's nazi past in order to scare off a small but vote strong group. DISGUSTING.

Isn't it funny how the Washington Post, one of the most sold-out left rags in existence is so giddy over Arnie? One of the papers that went after JimRob's Free Republic and tried to shut him down, really is head-over-heels for Arnie.

Gee, I wonder why??

1. Their political views are one and the same

and / or

2. They want to push Arnie into the lead so they can knock him off just before the election with all the dirt they are collecting on the Terminator (terminated?)candidate.

I still believe that this level of response will only intensify.

And many others currently still solidly ambivalent and some even solidly leaning much further left--will end up joining the bandwagon for Arnold.

I would not be overly surprised to see him get more than 70% of the vote--perhaps even more than 80%.

The psychological and sociological dymanics are potent and incredibly fascinating.

I NEVER compared Arnold to Ronald Reagan. But if that's your way of justifying bringing up hitler, it's still disgraceful.

Nothing has shocked me about some people's apparent glee at helping the Democrats win
the CA governor's office twice in LESS than 365 days.

If you think Ahnold is getting unfairly slimed now...just wait for folks
to blame this historic electoral triumph of the Democrats on him...

I guess Ahnold has blinded me, just like those Communists Dana Rohrbacher,
David Dye (sp?), Nixon assistant Hugh Hewitt, George Schultz, etc.
Shame on me.

Good point. And history is ripe with examples of the aftermath of leaders who are put in office solely on the basis of their charisma. Hitler, Mussolini, Clinton......

Remember this?

Hey Ron!

The Sacramento Bee, as you know, is basically a FAX machine for the DNC. But its even-handed political commentator Daniel Weintraub (Insider -- you know, your man Hewitt's bud) said this of that meeting in his blog:

But it is not, as Paul Harvey would say, the end of the story. The scene was incredible. I have been following candidates for governor in this state since 1986, and there simply has never been anything like this, or even close. The Schwarzenegger campaign kept the details about this event under wraps until early this morning to keep down the size of the crowd. A political campaign trying to keep down a crowd? The Orange County Register this morning carried a listing of where all the major candidates were appearing today – but it didn’t include Arnold coming to their readers’ own backyard. It didn’t matter.

I was there by 9 a.m. for the 12:30 pm event on Main Street, near the Huntington Beach Pier, and the sidewalks were already buzzing. By noon the place was a madhouse. A crowd of a couple hundred people stood outside a restaurant where he was coming to speak to a group of local business owners, while several dozen more onlookers leaned from balconies overhead. The throng spilled out into the cross street, which the police eventually blocked off to auto traffic. And a receiving line two or three deep on the sidewalk stretched several hundred feet down Main Street toward a store into which Arnold was headed. The crowd waited for over an hour under a hot midday sun to get a glimpse of him. As Arnold made that walk, the crush of reporters, fans and gawkers was overwhelming. A couple of small children who got in the way were nearly trampled. The closest thing to which I can compare it was the mosh pit at the Van’s Warped Tour punk concert I attended with my son a few weeks ago. People were screaming for Arnold, reaching out to touch him, seeking (and getting) autographs. My favorite was this one "The teachers are for you, Arnold! The teachers are for you!" (What, they didn't get the word from the CTA?)

Is this the best way to choose a governor? Not if you want to see the line items in the budget he might propose next January. But I talked to eight or ten local residents who had wandered onto the event and was struck by how little they cared about his specific policies. And it wasn’t just that they were star-struck. They were attracted to Arnold’s passion, his optimism, his heart, his take-charge attitude. They have a sense that things are going downhill in California, and they don’t want to hear excuses. They don’t want to hear that it was the private energy generators or the economy or the Bush Administration. They want to hear someone tell them that he can make it right again. That’s what they seem to be hearing from Arnold.

This was conservative Republican country, so it wasn’t a surprise that they were overwhelmingly in favor of the recall. But it was something of a surprise that they were so comfortable with Arnold. I didn’t hear anything about Prop. 13 or abortion or gay rights. I didn’t hear much pining for a “real Republican.” If this was any indication, Arnold is going to win over much of the Republican base. And he can keep wooing the center.

I'm increasingly confident that Schw can take it -- or California deserves its own doom. Well, I already know it does; still, on rare occasions, the California electorate has a passing flash of sanity. I'm hoping this will be one of those rare occasions.

Your "sellout" FRiend,
Dan

That is straight up, RonDog! The Teachers' union may support Bustamove, but the teachers DON'T. Davis has made a HASH of the school systems.
