HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., Aug. 22 -- Arnold Schwarzenegger stopped at a sidewalk cafe here in Surf City to chat today with a few local business owners, then strolled along Main Street. More than 1,000 people rushed to the scene to watch.

They climbed trees. They stood atop cars, lined balconies, stopped downtown traffic and nearly overwhelmed his security detail.

It was the first time Schwarzenegger took his celebrity gubernatorial campaign to the streets, and bedlam erupted.

Even before his appearance today, Republican leaders had begun pressuring other GOP candidates running in the state's Oct. 7 recall election to drop out and clear the field for the actor. That campaign intensified after the response Schwarzenegger received here.

No disagreement here. Let's face it--getting a very conservative governor in California would be like trying to successfully elect a socialist in South Carolina. Ain't going to happen, at least given the political landscape today and in the near future.

I was there when they were waiting for Arnold, but couldn't wait. My office is a few blocks away; had to get back to work. Dana Rohrabacher's office is a block away.

Big enthusiastic crowd, including a dweeb from the LaRouche organization with a poster along the line of: "There was once another Austrian Artist." I verbally berated the sick little phuque, then thought better and walked away.

All I want to know is if Ahnold has had any phone contacts with Leni Reifenstahl (sp?).

I won't get too concerned unless I hear Arnold say "I'll make sure the trains run on time." Remember folks, its not what you do to fix things, its how you make people feel. Arnold feels your pain. He always beats up the bad guys and wins. We didn't learn anything from Clinton. I am more convinced than ever that America is absolutely doomed if we don't have divine intervention from Heaven.

With a long business trip back East coming up shortly and my hair beginning to look a little shaggy, I figured lunch would be a good time to get my hair cut today.

My barber is up a couple of blocks from the beach on upper Main street in Huntington Beach. As he cut my hair, he casually mentioned that Arnie was having lunch at the Inca Grill down the street.

I remarked that perhaps I would take a drive by as I was leaving to take a look; the other barber said that would be a bad idea, since they had heard from other customers that there was a large crowd.

I was about to blow it off but at the last moment decided to walk the couple of hundred yards just to see what was going on. As I got closer, I could see the cops had blocked off lower Main street and that the news vans/helicopters were out in force.

Hmmm, this was a bigger event than I had figured. I thought it would be a regular 'meet the folks' type of staged event with a couple of people around. Instead, it was a full-blown mob scene...

Sorry, but this is stupid. I see big adoring crowds at GWB receptions, shall we post a picture of Hitler next to him as well? If Reagan were able to go touring around the country, you can bet he would have tons of people mob him.... would you take a little black pen and fill in the area under his nose?

Attack Shwarzy for his relative liberalness, but associating him with Hitler because he has adoring crowds is pretty stupid IMHO.

Schwarzenegger Tries to Add Some Substance to Celebrity

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 20 — Arnold Schwarzenegger came out from behind the curtain today to put some muscle in a campaign that until now was based on sheer celebrity, calling for a constitutional cap on state spending and making clear his distaste for new taxes.

Facing a horde of cameras and reporters from as far away as China, Mr. Schwarzenegger, 56, was flanked by his advisers, Warren Buffett, the billionaire investor, and George P. Shultz, former secretary of state. Using humor and a few specifics, the former Mr. Olympia tried to dispel any perception that he is a movie star on a vanity project.

Mr. Schwarzenegger, a Republican, said one of his priorities, should he be elected to replace Gov. Gray Davis, would be to rein in state spending. He said he would appoint an outside auditor, John Cogan, the economist and Mr. Shultz's colleague, to look at state finances.

"We must have a constitutional spending cap and must immediately attack operating deficits head on," Mr. Schwarzenegger told a ballroom packed with reporters at the Westin Hotel near Los Angeles International Airport.

"Does that mean we are going to make cuts?" he said. "Yes. Does this mean education is on the table? No. Does this mean I am willing to raise taxes? No. Additional taxes are the last burden we need to put on the backs of the citizens and businesses of California."
