Homelessness grows as more live check-to-check

Homelessness in major cities is escalating as more laid-off workers already living paycheck-to-paycheck wind up on the streets or in shelters.

As Americans file for bankruptcy in record numbers and credit card debt explodes, more workers are a paycheck away from losing their homes. Now the frail economy is pushing them over the edge. With 9 million unemployed workers in July, the face of homelessness is changing to include more families shaken by joblessness.

Perhaps you'd like the government to give everyone a job. Or maybe we could pass some more laws.

I have the sneaking feeling you call yourself a "conservative" or "libertarian".

Absolutely ditto. I grew up poor as poor gets. I learned that success in life was only going to be by my own determination.

I look down on most (not all) poor people because most don't have the good sense to quit making stupid decisions that keep them poor.

Here's a thought. Cut the property tax by, say, drastically cutting teacher/administration salaries. Oh. You can't do that? That would be insensitive? Sorry.

I paid my 2k for dinner, I was there in support, I am saying this because Bush only picked up a million bucks in the war chest and it worries me.

But then they were beset by personal financial problems, which caused them to miss house payments.

How nebulous can this author get? She's almost putting up a neon red flag to the fact that she's deliberating obscuring some facts and mitigating the family's own culpability in their situation.

I'd like to know just what these mysterious "personal financial problems" were.

Some of the rich folks here need to remember that.

I would venture to guess that most of the people you refer to as "the rich folks here" aren't really rich at all. In fact, many of us are tired being called "rich" (and told to pay taxes as if we were).

Wasting their time until election day, you see the nice thing about the United States, you can be dumb, poor and a loser but you still get to vote.

Anyone who approaches life with an attitude like that is probably going to be dumb, poor, and a loser no matter who they vote for. Which means they are wasting their time even on Election Day, too.

All the more reason not to give the Dims an excuse. Bush needs to address unemployment. His economic team just keeps saying that everything will get better soon.

Bush can't do anything about unemployment.

Funny. I was just stating the truth, I myself come from a upper class family, but have always remember what my grandmother funkhouser told me, "the world was built for the stupid."

In San Francisco, the city reports that the homeless population in 2002 was 8,640, an 18% rise over 2001.

In a city of how many millions?? Please.

Nearly a quarter of Americans would be late on mortgages, rent or other bills if a single paycheck were delayed, according to a 2003 poll by Automatic Data Processing

Well then, save some money for a rainy day. If you spend 100% of your paycheck, you are living above your means.

No, the news is based on a report by a bunch of (mostly) lib dem mayors with the political purpose of attacking Bush. Whatever facts included have been manipulated and are therefore not credible.

Instead of whining about me doing your thinking for you, why don't you ask the mayors who put this bogus report together to face the facts and solve homelessness if it is such a big problem for them. If it's anyone's job, it's theirs.

Rich is anyone who's got the good wisdom to live on less than they make and have a little money in savings.

Actually the statistics are true, last night in Denver bush only had 350 supporters show up for his benefit, only 1 million raised and there were over 4000 protesters outside with signs that read, "Where is my job?". Open your eyes and your ears and pay attention to your fellow man.

Sammy, after reading the Dever Post article, it dawned on my what a piece of feces you must be. You lied on purpose! That's so disgusting. That is the main reason you liberals are so lost in the world today. There is nothing -NOTHING- honest about you people. 4000 protesters! PLEASE! And the group inside with Bush were INVITED. I thought your breed where appalled at lies (tee-hee). Go pray for forgiveness.

I myself come from a upper class family, but have always remember what my grandmother funkhouser told me, "the world was built for the stupid."

I myself did not come from an upper-class family, and I don't have any patience for people who react to every bump in the road of life by calling on the government to fix their situation for them.

The world may have been built for the stupid, but it sure wasn't built by them. If people were more interested in building the world than in having it built for them to their own specs, they would be far more successful.

Actually from what I have always been told, wealthy means a person who lives well within their means and has made their money in an ethical way. Rich means someone who has screwed anyone and everyone to acquire what they have.
