Lt Gov becomes Gov and recall is over???

Who knows? I could see a scenario where the recall continues and then Bustamonte becomes the target and can't be elected - is the recall against the person, or the office at that point in time?

Recall is not over, even if he does. The recall will be held and his replacement may be out then too. I suppose Cruz would just revert to Lt. Governor.

Lt. Gov. would only serve until recall election.

I was thinking about that, and I think you are right, since the Lt. Gov. has put himself on the ballot. And they can keep it in the family now.

We are going to have our recall - one way or the other!
California Election Code
11302. If a vacancy occurs in an office after a recall petition is filed against the vacating officer, the recall election shall nevertheless proceed. The vacancy shall be filled as provided by law, but any person appointed to fill the vacancy shall hold office only until a successor is selected in accordance with Article 4 (commencing with Section 11360) or Article 5 (commencing with Section 11380), and the successor qualifies for that office.
