I was hoping I wasn't the only one who thought that it would be insane to run a candidate who talked about abortion and gay marriage in a campaign brought on because of a FISCAL emergency.

That's like the Dims talking about the economy after 9-11 and as war with Iraq loomed. People have every right to look at you like you're nuts.

Gotta pick the right candidate for the right time. W won in 2000 because he's got that "awshucks" thing, likes hanging out at his ranch and projects a very simple guy with simple tastes, which after 8 years of Clinton's drama and glitter really spoke to voters. There were probably half-a-dozen GOPers who would have made better presidents than Bush (and that's not a hit on Bush, simply a mathematical certainty) but none of them could win in 2000.

Are there GOPers who'd be better governors of CA than Arnold? Damn straight. Do any of them have a shot at winning? Nope. Sometimes it comes down to the letter after their name. I vote against McCain and Kolbe in every primary, and vote for them in every general election. I hate them both and can't wait to get them out of office, but if my choice is them with an R or some other guy with a D I've got to go with the R, we need the numbers in DC. Just like we need some number other than zero in CA.
