And two words that I have come to loathe: "offended" and "tolerance"

Why loathe them? That requires energy and saps the spirit.
Simply relegate them to irrelevance, never meriting another thought.

I discriminate. I decide with whom I associate and for how long.
If I "offend" anyone and I am not conscious of it, it must be a creation of his imagination and let him deal with it.
As for tolerance, if I have no control over it, it loses its meaning. If the government and armed goons must enforce it, I call it by another name. If I am threatened with jail for insensitivity, start building more jails.

To quote a famous "idiot"... bring it on!

This is a pretty good theory -- though I would limit its application to white male liberals. Women and minorities, on the other hand, may have other motives for liberalism -- it's (false) promises of power. But for white men, I can think of no other explanation than self-loathing and fear of envy.

The writer is uninformed on the nature of liberalism isn't he? Thomas Sowell made the "liberals as Gods" point very well in "Visions of the Anointed." So did Marlowe, Melville and many other English writers.

Chamber's underlying theme of good and evil is profound. Few books have affected me as much as his Witness.

As is often the case here in the Free Republic, the posters have seen the core truth better than the author, especially those posters who react as Christians.

First, a codicil: We have recently had some fun with this latest example of liberal lunacy"Political Conservatism as Motivated Social Cognition," recently published in the American Psychological Association's Psychological Bulletin. The article purports:

Four researchers who culled through 50 years of research literature about the psychology of conservatism report that at the core of political conservatism is the resistance to change and a tolerance for inequality, and that some of the common psychological factors linked to political conservatism include:

Fear and aggression

Dogmatism and intolerance of ambiguity

Uncertainty avoidance

Need for cognitive closure

Terror management

The absurdity of lettered liberals masturbating before the world while cross dressing as real scientists has not been missed in this forum. We all enjoyed the laugh. Incidently, the fact that this is ultimately subsidized by taxpayers validates the comments on this thread about the hypocracy of liberal "compassion."

Now we are embarking on a trip into the liberal psyche and we want to avoid becoming what we decry. So the codicil, we (or at least,I) offer our analysis as opinion, not fact; as religion, not science; for free, not taxpayer subsidized.

So, why have the posters gotten closer to the truth than the author?

The author's principal insight is that the left operates out of fear of envy. He inquires of Coulter what motivates liberals to do daffy things or more importantly, even treasonous things. But he doesn't like her answer:

In the final concluding chapter, "Why Do They Hate Us?" you expect an answer to the question, and all she can come up with is: Liberals think they are gods. That’s it. What the hell is that? There is not even an explanation of what she could possibly mean.

First, the author does a good job of illustrating the wrong headedness of the left:

What, for example, could be more idiotic and masochistic than to oppose missile defense? This opposition cannot be understood unless one dispenses with its rhetoric and rationales and realizes that these folks at their emotional core do not want their country defended. The lunacy of the "global warming" hoax cannot be comprehended other than that its masochistic advocates do not want their civilization to prosper. Culture-destroying illegal immigration policies are defended by those who do not want their culture to survive.

You gotta love that paragraph. It catalogues the symptoms of leftism so well. But does the author's thesis explain the left's perverseness better than Coulter's?

Coulter's explanation is straightforward:

Liberals think they are gods."

The author's next line, "What the hell is that?" betrays that he is ignorant of sublime truth of Coulter's explanation. Coulter has gone to the root of the matter: Either one submits to God or one must play god and in so doing abandon himself to every perversion, hypocracy and lie which can be confected by his imagination (or, if you prefer, the Devil's imagination.)

The posters, not the author have got it right (although the author did not get it wrong,) leftism is essentially a soul sickness. This is a core concept and reveals a much deeper wisdom. The author seizes on one of the symptoms of this soul sickness (envy, or, the fear of envy)and treats it as the untimate revelation. He might just as easilly have identified lust for power and made an equally good case.

The soul sickness is trap created when man seeks to seize the throne. There can be no two track approach, either one must submit or rebel. Leftists are in a state of ceaseless rebellion. Rebellion is another name for war and it explains why we are in such a mortal cultural war.

Consider another metaphor: The Christian summons is essentially to kill the self and surrender to God. Destroy the ego and experience freedom. But the self, the ego is essentially a paracite which, before it consumes and destroys it host, will go to any length to protect its fiefdom. Against this foe, appeals to reason are no more effective than they are against dysentery. That's why government programs to stop addictions do not work but faith based programs do.

And that is why liberals hate them so much, they instinctively realize that they attack their very raison d'etre:

They would be gods.

The authors main premise, "liberal guilt", does not explain why Julius and Ethel Rosenberg was spying...

But it does, in fact the Rosenbergs would be a good case point for him.
One of the reason attributed to the Rosenbergs for their treason, was that they felt that it was wrong for the U.S. to be the only country with nukes. They were not acting to support the U.S.S.R., they were simply making shure that the U.S. was not the soul super-power.

I my opinion, this would be a clear example of "envy avoidence".

(Note to Miss Pie - thanks for pinging me. And how come I couldn't find this article ont the side list? I think I'm missing stuff on FR, being a relative n00bie and all...)

Thanks to both of you - and the other posters for insightful comments. Now I'll add my (hope insightful) comments:

I thought Ann's last chapter - Why They Hate Us - was good. I think it is very clear that liberals are motivated by ency themselves, not fear of it. They envy God. They want to be God. They deny His existence, or if they do acknowledge His existence, it's an imaginary existence (note the Episcopalians and their "gay" bishop election). They envy God His lordship and control. They do not want to surrender to Him, they want to be the Judge of all. And their so-called goody-goodyism, that the author says is due to fear of envy, is just due to wanting to be the Great Benedactor and Merciful one, in imitation of the real Supreme Lord.
Atheism, hedonism, moral relativism, feminism, homo-nazism, communism - these are all materialistic philosophies or viewpoints, with the common thread that the individual's own desries and wants are what is important (although in the governing ones like communism it is state as an individual that is the Godlike imitator).

Envy of God is at the core.

I haven't been around here as long as some, and I don't know all the FReeper regulations, but I'm pretty sure it's a violation of the terms of service to post an article mentioning Ann Coulter without providing visual enhancements. To put it another way...

My view of leftists is that they tend to be people compulsively sublimating their personal failures and difficulties into a dissatisfaction or hatred of America. They pursue love by attempting to create an unconditionally loving socialistic society where they will find acceptance. They are generally not very bright and have little history of unacquaintance with concrete responsibility. They live in false somewhat parasitic play worlds. They are prone to jealousy and resentment. They tend toward sadistic passive-aggressive personalities.

You are dead on. The hate and envy are directed at Jews and Americans. America has (up until recently) had a strong "God oriented" viewpoint underlying its culture, and that is a Christian viewpoint -- not Hindu, Muslim, Bhuddist, or any other perspective. Christian Christian Christian.

And who really hates Christians and Jews? The people who envy, fear, and hate Christians and Jews are puppets. They are "running programs" in their heads that they did not put there, but by not being protected they are open to the trespass and thus become willing puppets of evil. IMO, this is why the leftists sometimes appear to be such empty headed bozos. When their "controller" is off doing something else, they don't know how to think for themselves and so they just demonstrate how hollow they all are. The hollow men and women....

As a former Communist, Whittaker Chambers had a profound understanding of the leftist mentality. His answer as to why anybody would adopt such an irrational philosophy was simply: "Because it is necessary to change the world."

At first I couldn't understand this simplistic answer. Then I realized when you combine the do-gooder's tunnel vision with the arrogance of the left-wing personality (and the power of the government), you have an unlimited capacity for evil. The "I know what's best and I'm going to help you even if I have to kill you because I need to create a perfect world" attitude.

Chambers got over this attitude and in the process discovered God. In "Witness" he describes how, while he was agonizing over what to do, an inner voice said just tell the truth and all would be well. We can all be grateful that he did so.

I think jack Wheeler has it right.....

before Ann Coulter, Jack was one of the most acerbic wits out there... after Ann entered the fray... a little jealosy has appeared-> IN JACK.. LOL.... Jack protests too much... but being Jack adds something to the mix instead of deleteing from the subject.. with his(Wheelers) Anns finishing comments(TREASON) are too ugly to address liberal motives... before Ann I loved Wheelers rants.. still do..

We are all blessed with both of them...very crafty too... one a Fox the other a Badger...
