It is probably a misquote and should read "large pile of stones." My ex used to take me to the beach. He would spot a fossil, then draw a big circle around it and I would try and spot it as well. Taught me to have an eye for fossils. They look like rocks except the surface is rough and layered - sort of like baklava pastry.
