Gov. Gray Davis became the nation's first governor in 82 years to face a recall election, as California's secretary of state announced Wednesday that a Republican-led campaign once discounted as improbable had qualified for the ballot.

Davis, a career Democratic politician who was elected in a landslide in 1998 before his popularity plunged amid California's energy crisis and budget deficit, must face the electorate in 60 to 80 days, according to state law.

It takes money to get the message out. In CA those in the know, know Tom McClintock. But for those who don't know him; he will have to get his message out over the radio and television. With Arnold out that leaves Aissa, Simon and McClintok. I believe McClintock is the best qualified of the three. He is the most experienced and with the line item veto he will be the best qualified to turn this state around.

Simon is an honarable guy, and he'll probably step aside for McClintock.

Issa is a whole different ballgame unfortunately...

I think it is better to leave as many as possible on the ballot.

The chances of someone punching the YES for reacll increases when they see some one they line in the ballot. If you think, any republican is better than Davis, then the above option helps, when no DEMS are running.

Pubbies in California may be infested with rino's like myself, but many of them have boatloads of money. McClintock will be well financed, if the powers that be decide that he is the right vehicle. I suspect the nascent initiative by the Dems to eviserate the two thirds legislative vote requirement for tax increases and adopting a budget has them frightened, and they want a GOP governor bad now. I know I am worried.

Some precincts have been saying they are considering vote by mail - instead of having to set up polling places to keep costs down.

I can't wait until we finally dump this loser!

Agreed 110%! I've been waiting for this for a LONG time. Hopefully by September, Davis will be out and we'll have a responsible Republican in the office instead.

If the California GOP "leadership" has to choose between funding Issa or McClintock, who do you think they would choose? (I would bet on Issa because he isn't as conservative as McClintock)

I think they will go for whom is most likely to win. That ain't Issa, who will be shreded by Davis. I suspect Davis would love a campaign where the issue is will it be me or Issa?

McClintock is clearly the best candidate, and so many think I am a leftist Pubbie around here (in part true actually, but only in part). Go figure.

"Precincts" have no power to decide anything. Heck, they are not even staffed. LOL. Perhaps you mean that some counties are thinking of not affording some precincts actual polling places. The courts will make short work of that one. Granted that will help the Pubbies, but as I said, it ain't gonna happen.

YEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!

Ahhhh! My voice is SO hoarse from chanting today across from the Secretary of State's office.

I am so excited - WE DID IT FREEPERS!!!!!!

OK - so I hope to see you ALL on Saturday at the State Capitol. Miss work. Travel far. Do WHATEVER it takes. The world is watching and we won't have another chance to make a real difference in this state and also set an example for the rest of the nation.

Off to go sleep now :) Been some crazy crazy crazy long days!!!

Perhaps, but all a candidate needs is a simple plurality, and the Greens are running one sole leftist candidate, so we don't want to fracture the middle and right vote.

Excuse me .. the precinct I'm in is staffed. Maybe not a lot of people - but we are staffed.

And .. if "it ain't gonna happen" - please explain.

Those that work at precincts on election day have no power to decide anything (and are temporary workers hired for the day), and certainly not whether there will be a precinct that folks can show up to on election day. It is all run by the county.

Listen fellas, all we need is a consolidated effort. All the naysayers said we wouldn't ever get this far and we have proved them wrong. Heck if the Angels can win the World Series anything is possible in CA!
