Lynch Receives Bronze Star Before Homecoming
Pfc. Jessica Lynch is returning home Tuesday, newly decorated for heroism in Iraq.
A member of Ft. Bliss' 507th Maintenance Company, Lynch was captured during the attack on a portion of the unit in Nasiriyah, Iraq on March 23rd. She was rescued from captivity on April 1st.
On Monday, Pfc. Lynch received the Bronze Star for heroism, Purple Heart for being wounded in combat, and P.O.W. Medal at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, where she has been treated for more than three months. KFOX will have a full report on Private Lynch's homecoming Tuesday night on KFOX News at Nine.

In some ways I don't think your Father got nearly as wound up over comments trashing the Purple Heart as the rest of you did. Many Purple Heart holders have real mixed emotions about that medal; not the least of which is a level of guilt.I know that's very common, but it really doesn't describe my dad. He was truly insulted by the remarks. He knew he earned it - and he did - he didn't get evac for eight hours, and took a lot of shrapnel just lying there...he lost part of his hearing, and lived with shrapnel inching ever nearer his spine his entire life, with the constant threat of permanent paralysis.
He also knew that he was one of the fortunate ones, and I know he had a lot of respect and appreciation for those who served with him, especially for those who didn't make it home (his own first cousin and best friend being one)...he definitely did not see himself as any kind of hero, but he honestly didn't suffer from guilt. And I'm glad he didn't, because survivor's guilt doesn't really benefit anyone.
I guess he just wasn't built that way.
He was also different from other Iwo vets in that he was a talker - a lot of guys didn't speak of it for the rest of their lives, but my dad really wanted us to understand what kind of place it was.
Sadly, I didn't fully understand it until he was gone.

You can't go by raw numbers. The Army is much larger than the Marine Corps and historically has been much more often engaged in close combat operations than either the Navy or Air Force.

When I was in AIT back in '83, an entire squad received the "Army Achievement Medal" for winning the push ball competition at a batallion field day. The push ball competition took place entirely within a single afternoon. I recall an E-6 or E-7 ripping his medals off and walking away from the awards ceremony.
Yes, the bar is lowered. Simply staying out of trouble is enough to get you an award these days. No I'm not talking about the good conduct medal.

The McDill CENTCOM stiffs?Hey! When I was in the Reserves, I was a MacDill CENTCOM stiff for three annual training rotations. Speaking of "MacDill stiffs", that brings back memories of certain "establishments" a few miles down Dale Mabry Highway from the base. :-)
