LOS ANGELES (AP) The chairman of the Democratic National Committee vowed Thursday that no Democrat will run to replace Gov. Gray Davis if the recall drive reaches the ballot.
"I want the folks here in California to know that we are not going to have another Democrat on the ballot. I think that is the single biggest message I can give today," Terry McAuliffe told a downtown news conference.
"So if you're a California voter and you want to vote to recall Gray Davis, you are not going to have an option but a bunch of right-wing conservatives on the ballot," McAuliffe said.
Proponents of the Republican-led recall hope the secretary of state will certify the effort as early as Wednesday, which is the next deadline for counties to report signature totals to the state. Backers say they've turned in more than 1.6 million signatures, nearly twice the number of valid signatures needed for the measure to reach the ballot.
In a recall, voters would be asked first whether to oust Davis and then to choose a replacement from a list of candidates.
Strategists from both parties believe the unpopular governor's chances of survival would be greater if no Democrats appear on the ballot.
However, some California Democratic lawmakers and party members in Washington have discussed uniting behind another Democrat if it appears Davis would lose a recall vote, as recent polls indicate he might.
McAuliffe sought to discount that scenario.
"I'm telling you here today that there will not be a Democrat on that ballot" McAuliffe said when asked if Democrats would stay off the ballot even if it appeared Davis would lose office.
"I think Republicans are trying to push all this stuff out, that this one's going to run and this one's going to run," McAuliffe said. "And to a voter's mind out there, they think they're going to have options."
"They're not going to have options," McAuliffe said.
McAuliffe pledged party backing to help Davis. He said he participated in a conference call Wednesday with Democratic activists throughout the country to update them on the recall situation. He said there would be daily calls on the recall.
"This is what we did, obviously, with the debacle in Florida to keep everybody informed of what's going on," he said, referring to the 2000 presidential vote recount in Florida.

Wasn't Terry McAuliffe that "great strategist" who assured us that Jeb Bush was toast last year? And who the hell is he to tell any Democrat that they can't run for governor. He has no power to prevent it.

McAuliffe wanted to go on KSFO in San Francisco and talk about the right-wing effort to recall Davis, and also talk about WMD's. KSFO happens to be a conservative radio station, and the show he wanted to go on was the Lee Rodger's show in the morning. Way too funny. The answer was "No". No point in having the guy on for 20 minutes to spout the Democrat talking points.

Hmmm.... Didn't the NJ supreme court put a Democrat on the ballot so voters could have a "choice", even though it was patently illegal? And CA courts are as full of corrupt Demos as NJ.

Here's a whole bunch of them for you - enjoy!
On the effort to defeat Florida Governor Jeb Bush:
" (A state party poll) now has it 48-43 (Jeb Bush over Bill McBride)....That is a 5 point race and 23 percent of the state has no idea who Bill McBride is. So for this to be a 5-point race, Bill McBride only has one place to go: that is up.... I am going to predict that Bill McBride is going to be our governor of Florida.
"First of all, I am just going to hold Jeb Bush to his standard. He said after the debacle of 2000 when Al Gore got robbed of the presidency and we don't have to relive 2000, you have all heard me extensively on that he said 'I am going to make Florida a model for the nation at voting.' A model for the nation. And once again he has made it a laughingstock of the nation.
"He is the governor of the state; he is the chief executive of the state. He is the governor of all 67 counties. He is not the governor of Republican counties. He is the governor of all counties, and he needed to make sure not only that there was adequate funding but (that) ... we had adequate training procedures through the state.
"We will deploy thousands of people now on November 5 to make sure that when people go to vote in the polls in Florida on Election Day they can get in, that it will be a good process for them, and shocking as it may sound that their vote will be counted.
"Winning this governor's race in Florida (is our top priority). We will commit whatever resources it takes. I will put in any time to raise money around the country. I think we will have a great ability to get people around the country (to help out) because of what happened in 2000. People are still angry."

Let's see now, Bloomberg switched to Republican Party just in time to run and win as NY Mayor. Isn't it time for a Republican to switch and run as Democrat on this recall?

Methinks this is a tactical boo-boo...That's because you're not assuming that the DNC will INSTANTLY flip-flop if the recall goes through. Of course they will, this is just a talking point for this week. Rest assured it will pass down the media's memory hole of Mcauliffe wants it to.

He just conceded the govenorship of the largest state in the union.....is this man totally nuts? More like totally arrogant. And why does he think he has the power to prevent Demmycrats from running? If a Demmycrat wants to run he can just run. He doesn't need permission from that shmuck, McAwful.
