Normandy Veteran DC3 For Sale
NA | 07-02-03 | SELF

Posted on 07/02/2003 10:48:35 AM PDT by Robe

A US registered, Normandy Invasion participant and still painted in the Normandy scheme, operated under a FAR Part 135 certificate, has come up for sale due to bankruptcy.

She is a documented vet of the Normandy Invasion ( part of the GLIDER GANG) as well as the Belgium (A Bridge Too Far)drop.

I flew this aircraft many years ago, and the thought came to me.... Would any freepers out there like to get together and purchase this a/c, either as a Foundation, or form a flying museum?

The ac is located in the southeast.

I would hate to see her hauling live stock in South America...

JUST A THOUGHT....

Ya never know till you ask

That is too high, unless its an Oshkosh Grand Champion Warbird or there's really lots of spares.

I just looked on an airplane web site, and it looks like fixer-uppers start at $80k, and there are several around $150k.

If I remember right.

Yup, much too high......She being sold by the 80% owner of the company right now....The company is in the hole for a Falcon 20F that they did the cargo conversion on.
I think that who ever holds the note on the Falcon will have first dibs on every thing in the store.
There's now way a DC3 is going to go for 1/4 mil in this economy...
PS ....the owner is a jerk, he was the Dir of Maint when I worked for the company many moons ago and his practices were one of the reasons I left.

Museums are generally pretty tight with cash. The people I worked with in Ca. usually traded planes and stuff between other collectors and the military. I doubt they often spent actual money, unless the money was donated for some specific purchase.

They often get things donated, since they can provide a tax deduction. But in this case, if the aircraft was used in a business that's gone belly up, I doubt they need the tax writeoff.

Whatever happens, it needs to be kept flying. These were great aircraft, and the fact that somebody would buy it even today to use as a cargo plane speaks volumes about it.

Let's look at the D Day Museum connection. I think it may be viable.
Let me know and we'll get rolling on it, what is the the worst we can be told? No?

I don't have any place to park it! But thanks for thinking of me!

Why not donate it to a museum?

DC-3 is the one airplane I desperately want to fly before I hang it up. And, I've already flown about 95 different types of aircraft. If you form a ping list on this, please include me.

Thanks for the ping Johnny.

It'd be nice if the Evergreen Museum n McMinnville would pick it up.

The concept of a "Free Republic Air Force" (FRAF) sounds really cool...

Cool idea, if there is no benefactor here, there are many foundations already operating that might snap it up so it can be maintained.

Nice!!! You might try the Confederate Airforce? I forget where they are based out of. Our company was seriously considering the Warren Bassler conversion many moons ago , before we moved into jets.
