CNN-Senate Judiciary Members Suggest Imminent SCOTUS Retirement Coming..Possibly today
The Hotline / National Journal and CNN ^ | June 26, 2003 | Ted Barrett

Speculation here in Washington is at a fever pitch at this point about whether there will be an announcement today.

If one believes the relationship between the Senate Majority Leader and the White House is as close as been rumoured, then the release by Sen. Frist of his guidelines for handing a SCOTUS nomination may actually signal something in the next 48 hours.

CNN's 'Morning Grind' reports that Senate Judiciary Members whispering about increased chatter suggesting an 'imminent retirement' possibly as soon as today; the reports are described as 'specific' and 'credible.'

They sound like intelligence officers debating whether the threat level should be raised to Orange.

Asked if he's heard about a retirement, Chief Justice Rehnquist said with a smile, 'No, I havent heard anyhing.'

After today's ruling I am pessimistic about any decent person getting on the SC. We have 7 of 9 appointed by Republican presidents, yet we get only 3 votes in the Lawrence case. In light of this and what is going on in the congress and white house, I have concluded that we conservatives need to quit looking to Washington for any satisfaction. We need a states rights revolution. All states whose sodomy laws were struck down today should issue a proclamation that this decision was not the will of the people of their states or their elected representatives, and they will not be subject to it. I am serious; this is a battle betweenthe states/ citizens and the Washington oligarchy

Batchelor and Alexander said on WABC the other night that it was Stevens...that he is in his eighties and that if he doesn't step down now then he'd have to wait until after the 2004 election to avoid highly politicizing the process.

- remember O'conner's remark during the recount about leaving?
-O'conner has agreed to advise the Arab world on jurisprudence(stop laughing). She wouldn't have taken on that responsibility if she weren't leaving.

-when chief justice leaves, there is an extra option for CJ if Scalia or Thomas is rejected. W won't have to choose that wussie Kennedy.

SHE"S GONE! Count on it.

I never really thought about the importance of a woman being one of the Justices to overturn Roe, but I see your point. Implicitly I knew it because in the Senate I think it's very important (and House) for America to see pro-life women. Elizabeth Dole I would say is the most pro-life woman in the senate (spare me the flames freepers). I wanted Suzie Terrell to win, but oh well.

If it's going to happen, Freepers better prepare for an all out political war.

Freepers, rather than waiting to see what happens with Estrada, we need to take the lead. That means presuring Senators, special interest groups, media organizations, etc. This thread is meant to be an ongoing effort to get this man confirmed. For too many years liberals have had their way on the courts. Now, President Bush is in a position to move the courts to the right. The election of '02 showed that the country is with the President. I think it's time to let Daschle, Hillary, and Pelosi know this is Bush country. Are you with me! Let's FREEP these people.
