When I was active duty the LEO - WOD federal assistance program I was attached to for a while ,AKA JTF-6 , was providing such to LEO's on a regular basis. As you state the tewls and toys are still there for the asking by ones departmental logistics weenie pretty much.

My one concern and maybe you can answer this in FReep mail or open forum (or respectively not at all :o) is why are LEO's being given M60's and SAW's or in some cases even M2's (MaDuce) ?

I can understand the tactical application of a full auto M16 or Sub gun for Door kickers doing the dance of death from a stack having to remove as a last resort a POS from inside a dwelling but to unleash a belt fed SAW (M249 or M60) in urban settings would be IMHO a risk managers wakeup call .

A 50 calliber sniper rifle I could justify as I can plan or prepair the down range hazard to bystanders and occupied dwellings for that single surgically placed (hopefully) round by a trained selected marksman.

But my question is what is the mindset of those authorizing such use and what is the alledged scenerio they "think" their use would be justified.

I am unaware of deptartments getting SAAW's, 60's or 50 cals. This is the first I have heard of that.

Perhaps the gubment thinks things may get bad with terrorists/muslims in this country. I could see that happening. Particularly in bigger cities. Who knows what kind of armament they have.

That's the only reason I can see. Don't know if things will ever get that bad.

Oh, I guess if Hitlery is elected President in '08 we may need them.

I don't know who'd they issue them too if we got them. Most of our guys are former military but not many of them were grunts.

lots of lea's and state govts. are getting in on homeland security grants and spending it on what fits the guidelines of the grants. there are taxpayer supported agency groups that have meetings to sit down with the grant proposals and brainstorm on how they can get this grant to spend it.

similar to school boards that will fill every closet with supplies as the fiscal year winds down (whether they'll use the crap or not), they spend it or lose the appropriation for the subsequent year... and these one time sugar grants are frosting.

why? because they can.

so next time yer in pucker-brush LA, think carefully bout them local ordinances. you don't want any surprises :)
