GRAY DAVIS RECALL A HOAX? ALERT (?!?) [No, not a hoax]
Liberty Belles email

Posted on 06/12/2003 12:02:29 AM PDT by AnnaZ

Greetings Liberty Belles and Beaux!

Many of you are probably aware of the campaign to recall Governor Gray Davis.  If the people decide they are not pleased with the performance of a politician, they have a legal right to petition for his removal from office.  If the petition gathers enough signatures and the politician is recalled, an election is held to determine who will take his place in office.

The Recall Gray Davis campaign has touted its huge success claiming approximately 20,000 signatures per day.  There is one problem, however.

As of this writing, the petitions on
www.recallgraydavis.com and www.davisrecall.com contain language that negates the purpose of the petition.  Specifically, the second to last paragraph states:

"The answer of the officer to be recalled is as follows:  IF YOU SIGN THIS PETITION IT MAY LEAD TO A SPECIAL ELECTION THIS SUMMER COSTING US TAXPAYERS AN ADDITIONAL $20-40 MILLION.  Last November, almost 8,000,000 Californians went to the polls.  They voted to elect Governor Davis to another term.  Just days after the Governor's inauguration in January, however, a handful of rightwing politicians are attempting to overturn the voters' decision.  They couldn't beat him fair and square, so now they're trying another trick to remove him from office.  This effort is being led by the former Chairman of the State Republican Party, who was censured by his own party.  We should not waste scarce taxpayers' dollars on sour grapes.  The time for the partisanship and campaigning is past.  It's time for both parties to work together on our State's problems.  Moreover, the allegations leveled against the Governor are false.  As governor, Davis has vetoed almost $9 BILLION in spending.  California, along with 37 other states, is facing a budget deficit due to the bad national economy.  The Bush Administration has announced the federal deficit this year will be the biggest in history.  $304 BILLION.  In these difficult and dangerous times, LET'S WORK TOGETHER, not be diverted by partisan mischief. /s/ Gray Davis Governor Gray Davis 9911 W. Pico Boulevard, Suite 980 Los Angeles, CA  90035."

We are currently researching this issue to find out whether or not there is a
legitimate recall campaign and to determine who is behind this fraudulent
campaign.  We will keep you posted as events develop.

In the meantime, read all petitions carefully, and do not submit your personal
information to this fraudulent campaign.

In Freedom,

Jennifer and Joe

P.S.  Thanks, Gene C!

What happens if Davis resigns just before the recall election?

Does the Lt. Governor take over and is the election cancelled?

I signed the petition here in San Francisco at Safeway on Market Street. I believe that I read the language and I don't believe that the one at Safeway was a hoax. I'd like to know though...wonder if I could find out?

. Not to mention the 20-40 million cost to Californian tax payers.

That's a drop in the bucket compared to the 2 Billion Dollars the license increase will cost us per year...

NO! It is NOT a hoax, although there are some fake petitions out that that support Grayoug. That language is just the required rebuttal language issued by Grayout's office. If you agree that The Prince of Darkness needs to be removed from office, then you should sign the petition.

I just searched Google for the phrase "answer of the officer sought to be recalled" - and apparently that section is a legal requirement for a recall petition.

Good catch. I was suspecting as much, and I believe anyone who thinks about it for a moment would recognize that allowing the office holder to issue a rebuttal statement would seem like a reasonable requirement. How anyone could construe this as "negating" the effect of the petition is beyond me. If I were just a bit more cynical, I'd suspect a disinformation campaign by the foes of the petition.

I guess my concern is "why not let Davis fall into the sword deeper? With the increase in the auto registration combinded with the increased sales tax, Davis has dug his own grave. Not to mention the 20-40 million cost to Californian tax payers.

So we leave him in office to REALLY screw up for what purpose? So that we make California a super-colossal bad example instead of just a horrific one? If there a chance to get someone in office who'll veto the crap coming out of the legislature, I say we take it. The legislature has prepared a number of bills, including universal health care paid for by employers. They've strippped the language out of them and left them as 'intent' shells for the time being so that the costs don't have to be calculated. When the budget is passd, the language will be replaced and the bills will be voted on. I don't want to take the chance that these will pass and we'll have a governor who'll sign them. 20-40 million for a special election would be a bargain under the circumstances.

"Now I'm wondering."

Not to worry!!! Sign it... have others sign it... and send it in quickly... PLEASE! This confusion must stop!!!

Mrs. Wasp and I mailed ours in yesterday... I made a copy and although it is confusing due the the opposing statement following the ":" being printed in capital letters and thus looks more important than the REAL heading preceeding the ":"

DO NOT BE DECEIVED (or faked out) or upset whatsoever!!!

They are required by law to print the EXACT statement of "the officer (Governor Davis) sought to be recalled" as presented by said offensive officer's people. You can be certain of this: THEY POURED OVER THIS REQUIRED RESPONSE FOR DAYS TO MAKE THIS EXACT QUESTION ARISE IN YOUR MINDS!!!

ALL of the Petitions say that. Pull up the petitions from which ever recall effort your do support and you will discover it to be true It is the RESPONSE that the constitution allows Davis to submit.

You are screwing up the recall effort with this thread. Please ask the moderator to pull this thread. The allegation is flat-out in error.

Moderator please pull this thread.

Moderator, do not pull this thread!

One of the main functions of Free Republic is to subject news and rumors to critical commentary and analysis. Because of this thread, many people who had received the email from Liberty Belle have now been informed that the information was inaccurate.

After I emailed the Liberty Belle organization, they sent out a retraction which reads as follows:

From: "Liberty Belles" [feedback@libertybelles.org]
Sent: Thursday, June 12, 2003 6:38 AM
Subject: RE: "fraudulent" Davis recall petitions

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Please accept our apologies for the e-mail entitled, "RECALL DAVIS HOAX." This was sent to you in error.

The paragraph in question is a legitimate rebuttal issued by Governor Davis as is allowable by law. THE PETITIONS ON WWW.DAVISRECALL.COM AND WWW.RECALLGRAYDAVIS.COM ARE NOT HOAXES.

Again, please accept our apologies for this e-mail. We were given incorrect information from what is usually a reliable source and rushed to get the information to you right away.

Sincerely,

Jennifer and Joe

Lee Rodgers on KSFO this AM had a guy on that saw a table with recall Davis written on it in front of a Wal Mart. He went up to it and looked at the petition and saw that was a petition to NOT recall Davis. Then a woman comes up to sign a recall petition and he mentions to her its not a recall petition and the guys at the table started to threaten him. Evidently these were union goons planted to confuse people and get phoney signatures. Be very careful what you sign. These libs will do anything to deceive.

This petition is legitamate. The rumors, about a bogus petition being passed off as the real thing, are greatly exaggerated. The negative text is just Gray Davis's rebuttal to the recall drive.

We have to stop looking for conspiricies around every corner. Let's just get this recall on the ballot and leave our tin foil hats at home.

It appears that the "Liberty Belles" (whoever they are), have inadvertently caused harm to the recall effort by sending out their mass email. PLEASE CHECK YOUR SOURCES BEFORE OVERREACTIING!

The thread title's been changed, and I apologize for posting prior to researching. Forgive me, please?

(And I don't mind at all if the thread is pulled... although it's not without its humbling educational value.)

Ya gonna put this thread in yur blog? :-P

I agree with your comment re: the educational value in posting it.

The issue certainly was rapidly triaged, gutted, resembled and left for all to marvel anyone who might by chance stumble over it in the future.

The outcome, certainty.. that this recall must not be stopped. It is worthy of pursuing to send a message similar ot one sent back in 1911 to the roailroad barons and syndicates that ruled the state capitol, Beware of those who would mortgage and saddle a state with massive debt.

You do not own this state as your own to plunder, but to serve. That vision has been lost , again, and must be restored in Sacramento.
