The answer of the officer to be recalled is as follows:  IF YOU SIGN THIS PETITION IT MAY LEAD TO A SPECIAL ELECTION THIS SUMMER COSTING US TAXPAYERS AN ADDITIONAL $20-40 MILLION.  Last November...

That was the reply by Governor Davis.

Maybe recall petitions in CA are required to print a reply by the office holder on the petition?

That is curious, though.

According to http://www.sacbee.com/content/politics/ca/story/6114271p-7070011c.html

"Salazar said state law requires an official rebuttal like the one filed by Davis to be circulated along with petitions seeking support for a recall."

That's Gray's rebuttal. The petition is not a hoax and it hasn't been hacked. However, IIRC, there is a fake recall site out there.

I received mine a few weeks ago but had done nothing with it. Now I'm wondering. Think I will check on some things.

The answer of the officer sought to be recalled, if any. If the officer sought to be recalled has not answered, the petition shall so state.

Ok, I'll buy that. It does say "The answer of the officer sought to be recalled". So this is Davis' response to the recall petition.

Davis isn't that smart, but are the people doing the recall that dumb?

Isn't that just rebuttal language that one usually finds on state propositions?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Read it carefully. I think the site has been hacked who knows when and nobody noticed that some left wingers changed the petition and I think it DOES invalidate it, because the two paragraphs are contradictory, the first one talks about recalling Davis, the second one "let's work together" means you are signing that you don't really want to recall him. I wonder how long ago did this happen and how many petitions were invalidated this way.

"The answer of the officer to be recalled is as follows: IF YOU SIGN THIS PETITION IT MAY LEAD TO A SPECIAL ELECTION THIS SUMMER COSTING US TAXPAYERS AN ADDITIONAL $20-40 MILLION. Last November, almost 8,000,000 Californians went to the polls. They voted to elect Governor Davis to another term. Just days after the Governor's inauguration in January, however, a handful of rightwing politicians are attempting to overturn the voters' decision. They couldn't beat him fair and square, so now they're trying another trick to remove him from office. This effort is being led by the former Chairman of the State Republican Party, who was censured by his own party. We should not waste scarce taxpayers' dollars on sour grapes. The time for the partisanship and campaigning is past. It's time for both parties to work together on our State's problems. Moreover, the allegations leveled against the Governor are false. As governor, Davis has vetoed almost $9 BILLION in spending. California, along with 37 other states, is facing a budget deficit due to the bad national economy. The Bush Administration has announced the federal deficit this year will be the biggest in history. $304 BILLION. In these difficult and dangerous times, LET'S WORK TOGETHER, not be diverted by partisan mischief. /s/ Gray Davis Governor Gray Davis 9911 W. Pico Boulevard, Suite 980 Los Angeles, CA 90035."

I get the email's and snail mail's. I have not signed it yet. Should I sign the petition or not? I am leaning towards not.

"(3) The answer of the officer sought to be recalled, if any. If the officer sought to be recalled has not answered, the petition shall so state."

I am glad we have someone who knows the law.
So everything is OK, because the petition DOES state:

"The answer of the officer sought to be recalled is as follows:"....

I guess we had a tempest in a teapot, I got all worried, and how many others...

Thanks for setting it straight. I thought the site may have been hacked and the original petition altered to make it invalid.

OK, good, now I can send in the petition I got a couple of neighbors to sign.

The web site has NOT been hacked. The same paragraph is on my hard copy of the petition that was sent by the RNC to my wife (the Republican in the House). Can these phantom Left wing activists now hack paper?

Post 19 explained it well, that it's part of the law to include the response of the politician being recalled, so I guess it's OK, but the text of Davis's response is so pathetic, I thought surely the site was hacked and some leftist included some joke about the right wing politicians. I also didn't know that it has to include the statement by the politician being recalled.

So, all is well, I got all worried.

SIGN IT! State law requires that obnoxious little tidbit to be included on the petition in the name of equal time. Please, do not be fooled by that paragraph. Trickery like that is what Gov. Lowbeam is counting on to keep uninitiated folks like yourself from signing the petition.

Sign it and get as many friends and relatives as you can to sign it along with you. And the notion that someone could or would hack the site is somewhat ridiculous. Republican Rep. Darrel Issa would not have put $600,000 of his own money into a hoax, people.

You are all paranoid! This is just the legal boilerplate that is REQUIRED to be included in any such petition if "the person to be recalled" so desires! ALL the petitions include this statement. SIGN THE DAMNED THING! The bogus anti-recall petition effort that Davis et al are circulating in front of stores and such are indeed underhanded, meaningless attempts to confuse voters but THESE are the true petitions!

I just sent an email to Liberty Belles informing them that the recall petition is perfectly legitimate, and advising them to immediately retract their email and apologize to the organizations who they accused of fraud.

There is also the possibility that someone has forged Liberty Belles' return address on the email, and that this is some kind of dirty trick by Davis to sow confusion in the ranks of recall supporters.

In either case, let's stop this misinformation from spreading.

I guess my concern is "why not let Davis fall into the sword deeper? With the increase in the auto registration combinded with the increased sales tax, Davis has dug his own grave. Not to mention the 20-40 million cost to Californian tax payers.

The courts, legislators, and representatives will surely stall any impeachment effort and end up spending millions to acheive nothing. ..except make the republicans look like revengeful people (which isn't necessarily a bad thing, but the liberal press..you know)! Help me out here.

I have to live here in California, and the thought of three and a half more years of Davis as governor is horrifying. Davis doesn't care if he has "dug his own grave". This is his last term anyway due to term limits. The problem is that he has also dug our graves. The cost of a special election is infinitesmal compared to the tens upon tens of billions of dollars Davis has already cost California taxpayers, and the umpteen billions of additional dollars he will cost us if he remains in office.

Davis may or may not be replaced by someone decent, but it's hard to believe his replacement could possibly be worse. It's certainly worth the effort to find out. We know that the status quo is a total disaster.

I'd sign the petition, but with all the deluded fools around here who are mistaking that sexual predator RINO liberal creep Ahnold Schwollenpecker for a real "Conservative" leader, if he ends up being the replacement for Davis, I wouldn't sign the petition. Let the 'Rats take full credit for sinking the state.

You people are total idiots and aren't even smart enough to be allowed to vote!

Learn a little about election law before you spout off and certainly before you consider ever voting.
