Good Morning.
Welcome to the daily thread of Operation Infinite Freedom - Situation Room.
It is designed for general conversation about the ongoing war on terror, and the related events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.
Ex U.S. army chief: U.S. in Iraq for long stay
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former Army Secretary Thomas White said in an interview that it was time for the Pentagon to admit the U.S. military was in for a long stay in Iraq that will require a major commitment of troops.
Senior defense officials "are unwilling to come to grips" with the scale of the postwar U.S. obligation in Iraq, White said in an interview published on Tuesday in USA Today.
RAMADI, Iraq - Fort Carson troops will pull out of Fallujah, where a deadly attack was launched against them last week, and will be replaced by part of the 3rd Infantry Division, a commander said Sunday.
The 3rd Infantry Division, which has been stationed in Baghdad for the past month or so after fighting its way to the capital, will assign one of its brigades to Fallujah, considered a Baath Party stronghold, and nearby Habbaniyah, said Col. David Teeples, commander of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment.
The move comes after a string of attacks against the regiments soldiers across western Iraq in the past week, killing three and injuring at least 10.
Unfortunately, CIA reports tend to lack credibility these days. I think the comments by Major Bob the other day were telling.
.... I still hate Michael Eisner.
US lays down law about who's in and who's outMr Bush left world leaders digesting his new terms for the Washington relationship
PRESIDENT BUSH came to Europe to mend fences, his aides said. What they omitted was that this would not be a simple patch-up job. Before he swept out of Evian yesterday, Mr Bush had torn down the remains of the old Western alliance and dumped on the table radical proposals for an entirely new set of dividing lines.
As he left the G8 economic summit for the Middle East, Mr Bush left a group of world leaders still digesting his new terms for a good relationship with Washington.
In a post-Iraq world, shared values will no longer be enough to guarantee world leaders favoured status in the White House or an invitation to the Oval Office, aides say. Mr Bush is looking beyond a common heritage, for actions and results.
France poured cold water last night on an American and British proposal to limit the spread of weapons of mass destruction as Tony Blair and George W Bush sought to outflank Jacques Chirac at the opening of the G8 summit.I guess the reconciliation was rather lukewarm. While M Chirac, the host, sought to emphasise his vision of a multipolar world, Mr Blair and Mr Bush joined forces with other members of the Iraq coalition to try to force him to make combating terrorism a central agenda item of the gathering of industrialised nations.
The G8 group of leading industrialised nations has ended its annual summit with a declaration of unity over the future of Iraq.
A notable absentee on the last day was the US presidentIn a final statement on Tuesday, world leaders said their aim was a "fully sovereign, stable and democratic Iraq".
The G8 - Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the UK and US - said they "share the conviction that the time has now come to build peace and to reconstruct Iraq".
Blair faces MP revoltTony Blair is facing a backbench rebellion amid growing calls to hold a public inquiry into the evidence that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction.
Mr Blair arrives at Heathrow In the US, the Senate Armed Services Committee has announced that it will hold hearings on the existence of the weapons in Iraq.
Tory former defence secretary Michael Portillo today joined calls by Labour MPs for a public inquiry over the evidence used against Iraq.
Yeah, we've had lots of rain here in Maryland as well. I think I have seaweed in my front yard. I just hope the weather in Carolina is nice in late July when I make my way down to the Outer Banks...
Maybe he's carrying precious cargo .... Bass Ale!!!
SHARM EL-SHEIKH, Egypt (Reuters) - President Bush said after meeting Arab leaders Tuesday that their summit made progress on the U.S.-backed "road map" to Israeli-Palestinian peace. In an appearance with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak after the summit, Bush hailed the pledge of the five Arab leaders to crack down on violence and said if all sides fulfilled their obligations, steady progress could be made toward Palestinian statehood and a secure Israel.Gotta emphasize the caveat.
