Teachers earn more than editors & reporters

The Summer 2003 edition of the education journal "Education Next" has statistics on teacher pay from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that match my own research. To quote: "Teachers earn more per hour than architects, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, statisticians, biological and life scientists, registered nurses, university-level foreign-language teachers, and editors and reporters." The statistics exclude benefits, which are far richer for teachers than for private-sector employees.
On a related note, the web site of a private citizen has great graphs and stats on government spending. One graph shows how education productivity has declined by 70 percent over the last 40 years, based on the ratio of SAT scores to inflation-adjusted per-pupil spending. The graph can be found at:

I wonder if Semper911 supports choice?Of course I do. My district (in MA) just started a kind of school choice in an effort to raise funds without raising property taxes.
They are offering slots to students in surrounding towns, and then we will be given the reimbursement from the state instead of the towns where they came from. The slots we offered were taken in the first week. We have very high state test scores compared to surrounding towns, and we offer a lot of extra activities.
I hope it becomes a model for other districts. Do a good job, or lose your state money.

How much of the abuse comes from administrators who have to justify their own existence? Not so much abuse as indiffernce and hesitation to follow through on diciplining problem kids.
I think some of that probably falls under my category of "administrative abuse".

This post you insterted "UNIONS", a word which was not previously present. Nice try.
BTW I agree that unions are a major problem...

as opposed to the $11,000 it takes to educate a public school studentMy town (suburb of Boston) spends about $5800 per student. I know the big cities spend twice that, and that's why it's hard to defend teachers, bureaucrats, and teacher's unions.
Schools can be run well on a shoestring. Believe me, we have no surplus of cash. We just layed off 20 teachers and 11 aids, and I just ran to the drug store to buy Kleenex for my classroom.

I know 8 teachers who have two weeks at Christmas, two weeks at Easter and June, July And August off. That is aprox 12 weeks, some people call that 4 months. They have all federal holidays off, they have personal and sick days off and they get home everyday at 3:30. Sometimes earlier.
I grew up in a summer resort where the Moms who were teachers were all around for all of June, July and August. You are the one who is lying.

I'd like to know why other school districts in my area pay their teachers less and the kids' test scores are higher that's all. Monopoly education and mandatory attendance.
Wouldn't you be curious if you were paying $4,000 a year in school taxes, the exact amount it takes to educate one child in the local parochial school as opposed to the $11,000 it takes to educate a public school student in my town?
Damn, I'd be more than curious! I'd be at board meetings, on the local radio and in the paper!!!

6th-graders are fresh from elementary, where everything is assigned with a second chance attached. 7th-graders are beginning to get a taste of reality, with a big dose coming in my class. Because my course is high school credit, they have to follow high school rules-- no overs, alas! [Those nuns who taught me never gave a second chance on anything.] Isn't it sad that they can't do "corrections" on a test for a "70"?

The big cities spend twice that amount, and the kids don't even have textbooks! How can that be? At least our kids have books. They damn well better have books at $11,000 a pop. That's the very least a school can do for their students.
There is just so much corruption in the public school system. Too many plush offices, perks, and cars -- nothing filters down to teachers and the classroom. Why should a teacher have to spend $400 plus a year on supplies for her students? Why should parents have to spend a ton of money for supplies for their kids? It's as if public schools are just patronage mills for bigwigs.
My late father always said that public education is a racket. He was right.

My late father always said that public education is a racket. He was right. Yes he was. It needs to be privatized and made competitive.

It is not my fault your husband left, nor is it my children's fault or my husbands fault. I don't think Our hard earned money should go to support you or your family. I don't like that I have to pay someone like you to spread your foul attitude around to innocent children. You are a prime example of the problem. You dear have what is called an entitlement attitude, that means you think every one should have to pay for the poor choices you have made in life. I thank God everday that my children will never be influenced by someone like you. I have seen your kind and I am not impressed.

That is aprox 12 weeks, some people call that 4 months.
Let's see... at my school, 12 weeks divided by 4 weeks is 3 months. As I said, I must live in the wrong state. We only get two days off at Easter-- Good Friday and the next Monday. Now, spring break is a week, but that's partially due to the fact that we are a college town with an economy that revolves around the university schedule.
Now, we lousey teachers do get 5 days of state sick leave each year-- I guess even the state admits that we get sick being around kids for a living.
You are rather venomous on this topic, aren't you? Did you have a mean teacher during your childhood?
To: hsmomx3
Damn. I came here hoping for a good old-fashioned reporter-bashing thread, and instead it's a good old-fashioned commie public school teacher-bashing thread.
Oh well, I like those too. *gets out the lawnchair*

They have an entitlement attitiude, they deserve the scorn they get. Yup, I'm spending 3 more years in school so that people like YOU can say horrible things about me. Let's get something straight here. There ARE horrible teachers out there. There are huge problems in our education system. And I could keep my children at home, school them myself and flip the finger to every other kid in my community. I'd rather get involved and try to fix things.
How about you try to help us out, give good teachers your support, instead of treating us like WE are the enemy?

This type of teacher salary information is always misleading because a teacher's pay is based on the number of years of experiene, meaning, new teachers who earn $22,000 are out there too -- and, are decades away from earning as much as other professionals. The location of the teacher's employment also counts a lot as well. Some teachers can earn $50,000 after 30 years, while others will only earn $35,000 after 30 years. But, yes, looking at the most experienced teachers, at the top of the pay scale, in the best paid places, then, it certainly "appears" that teachers earn a lot.

Please, if you will, tell me where I said what my husband did was your fault. You made the statement that teachers, in general, do not raise their own children. I said, basically, that you are full of fertilizer and presented my own situation as partial refutation of your comment.
If anyone has a foul attitude, it's you. You are sour and, as I said, rather venomous. I'm sorry for you. [Actually, I'm glad I don't have to put up with you for a neighbor.]
You, sourpuss, can't read with comprehension. I haven't asked anyone to take care of my business. You have the problem with entitlement-- you think that you are entitled to spread your know-nothing venom with opposition from anyone.
I know what you mean about thanking God-- I thank God that my children don't have a souruss badmouth like you for a parent.
