Psyop: The Love’s Not Mutual

The U.S. military is using Metallica and the ‘Barney’ theme song as instruments of coercion in Iraq

NEWSWEEK

May 26 issue — Your parents aren’t the only ones who hate your music—some Iraqis hate it, too. U.S. military units have been breaking Saddam supporters with long sessions in which they’re forced to listen to heavy-metal and children’s songs. “Trust me, it works,” says one U.S. operative.

OK, be that way! I suspected that Toni Basil opus might date from the VERY early 80s but didn't think anyone would call me on it. Can I substitute Bobby Goldsborough's "Honey", or was that late 60s?

Seriously, When I worked for Electrospace we produced "FOLS" Family of Loud Speakers, a Highly portable HIGHLY LOUD system just for Psyops use.
Anything on a loop will drive folks LOOPY!.....But Imagine if you could make the enemy think that there was entire armoured column coming thier way!! Psyops is kinda Kewl.

And Im sure the Army has a Kewl sound System.

Metallica won't work on me, I like it.

But Barney? OK I'll confess now and spare you the trouble of turning it on.

Strap 'em in front of a tape from any Tony Awards show, and within an hour they'll be willing to tell you who kidnapped Lindbergh's baby and where to find Jimmy Hoffa.

"The Night Chicago Died" by Paper Lace

"Chick-A-Boom" by Daddy Dewdrop

"Daddy Don't You Walk So Fast" by Wayne Newton

"Beach Baby," artist forgotten (this one has the line about "surfing in San Jose" -- an INLAND city!)

"Once You Understand," by THINK (absolutely horrible Sensitive-Seventies spoken-word atrocity)

I would rather endure nine hours of Chinese Water Torture than a full listen to any of these aural monstrosities, all of which polluted the AM airwaves from 1972-74.

I very nearly drove my mom crazy when I was six. She still tells people about it to this day...

It's a world of laughter, a world of tears
It's a world of hopes and a world of fears.
There's so much that we share, that it's time we're aware
It's a small world after all.

Everybody!

It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small world after all
It's a small, small world.

I thought that was the coolest song EVER.

OK, more torture candidates:

Barry Manilow's "I Write the Songs"

Hell, anything by Barry Manilow

Shiny Happy People by REM ("OK, pull this bus off of the Pretentiousness Turnpike! I want the shiny people over here, the happy people go over there, I'm with the angry, gun-toting, meat-eating people!" -- Denis Leary)

Any other nominations?
