Sounds about right.

That is why I may sit this out. I think there are three outcomes, all bad.

1) Davis wins. He gets a swell head, and his enemies are demoralized.

2) Davis loses. Democrat wins. Winner works well with legislature. Even more socialist laws are passed, and winner can be re-elected. Republicans are demoralized.

3) Davis loses. Republican wins. Democrats are energized. New governor can only veto laws, which are overridden by the newly energized legislature. Loses big in next election. Republicans are demoralized.

I say let Davis try to fix his own problems. When he can't, elect more Republicans to the legislature during the next election cycle. Then go from there.

Since Republicans are already demoralized, I should probably add:

4) Do nothing. Republicans are demoralized.

I hate to say it, but I agree with you. The republicans had a chance to beat Davis in the last election, and failed. I think something like a recall should be reserved for either a watergate type situation or when someone changes his/her position on issues significantly from what was campaigned on. I don't think we have that here. Althought the CA constit allows for it, I think we will regret this in the future, as every time a politician becomes unpopular during his/her term, we will see recall efforts from the other side.

Good analysis. The Davis-recall effort is a no-win for California Republicans, if there were such a thing. It's just a bad, bad idea. The fact of the matter is, as badly as California needs an overhaul in its leadership, the state-GOP needs it more.

California is doomed for the forseeable future. Might as well let it tank on the Democrats' watch. Maybe it will eventually give rise to a viable second party in the state.
