VATICAN CITY, MAY 2, 2003 (Zenit.org).- Citing what he sees as a lack of effective mechanisms to direct the process of globalization, John Paul II proposed "a new constitutional organization of the human family."
The Pope addressed the issue of "The Governance of Globalization" when he met today with some 70 scientists, writers, philosophers, economists, sociologists and jurists, members of the Pontifical Academy for Social Sciences. The "processes by which capital, goods, information, technology and knowledge are exchanged and circulated throughout the world today often elude the traditional mechanisms of regulatory control put in place by national governments and international agencies," the Holy Father said in his address.
"Special interests and the demands of the market frequently predominate over concern for the common good," he added. "This tends to leave the weaker members of society without adequate protection and can subject entire peoples and cultures to a formidable struggle for survival."
"Moreover, it is disturbing to witness a globalization that exacerbates the conditions of the needy, that does not sufficiently contribute to resolving situations of hunger, poverty and social inequality, that fails to safeguard the natural environment," the Pope said.
"These aspects of globalization can give rise to extreme reactions, leading to excessive nationalism, religious fanaticism and even acts of terrorism," he warned.
He continued: "All of this is far-removed from the concept of an ethically responsible globalization capable of treating all peoples as equal partners and not as passive instruments. Accordingly, there can be little doubt of the need for guidelines that will place globalization firmly at the service of authentic human development -- the development of every person and of the whole person -- in full respect of the rights and dignity of all."
The "true success of globalization will be measured by the extent that it enables every person to enjoy the basic goods of food and housing, of education and employment, of peace and social progress, of economic development and justice," the Pontiff said.
However, this "goal cannot be achieved without guidance from the international community and adequate regulation on the part of the worldwide political establishment," he continued.
Consequently, "now is the time to work together for a new constitutional organization of the human family, an organization that would be in a position to meet the new demands of a globalized world," the Pope said.
"This does not mean creating a 'global super-state,' but continuing the processes already under way to increase democratic participation and promote political transparency and accountability," he concluded.
The article is quite 'leading.' It leads the reader to believe that the Holy Father is pro the globalization, the U.N. has spelled out with declarations... i e....one world GAIA wacko religion. The last paragraph of this article, states that the Holy Father's thoughts are for democracy, not the tyrant ways of Kofi Annan and the U.N.'s definition of globalization.
"This does not mean creating a 'global super-state,' but continuing the processes already under way to increase democratic participation and promote political transparency and accountability," he concluded.
I pray for the unity of all Christians, but not because I want the Pope to reign supreme! It has everything to do with wanting to be in union with every Christian, everywhere, as the one church of Jesus Christ. How sad that we are so divided.
The pope's infallibility is in matters of faith and morals when speaking to the whole church out of the chair.(ex cathedra.)
When the pope goes beyond that, he is no more catholic than the average parisioner and should be challenged on his views if you disagree with him.
And frankly beyond the faith and morals issues, his opinion should be challenged. He seems to be incompetent (outside the faith and morals area) with his naive socialistic views of the world. From my perspective I wish the pope would shut up on these matters. -Tom
So much that was mandated before under penalty of sin is now defunct. So my question to 'them' is were you fallible then or are you fallible now? Either way, I don't have the time or inclination to sort out their excathedra mishaps. I'll leave that to the Cardinals and such to do.
But I will not seek nor heed their counsel. They are not capable of leading their flock, no ifs ands or buts about it!
In the meantime I will seek my way through Christ, I don't need a third party administrator.
Actually, the Pope has never had one good word to say about capitalism except when he spanks free market economies for not doing more for the poor, he has not once since the end of the Iraq war expressed gratitude for the liberation of 24 million people from the yoke of tyranny, and the Holy Father knew for 20 years that priests were molesting children here in the United States.
I'm Catholic also, and I admire the Pope, but he is not infallible in his earthly judgments.
Unless someone actually tries to do something about megalomaniacs and dictators, in which case he can have a Vatican functionary characterize his military intervention as a "crime against humanity."
Bump
Free market fundies are cultists.
Jack Chick the source of free market fundamentalism? This would explain a lot.
The statement is quoted: "These aspects of globalization can give rise to extreme reactions, leading to excessive nationalism, religious fanaticism and even acts of terrorism," This is extremely wrong-headed, as the antecedents are not caused by "globalization" (read capitalism with free trade), and because it rationalizes extreme immoral behavior.
I think the Pope's concluding statements to this lay group he was speaking to are worth reflecting upon. Not only for you as an individual but for all entities, whether government, nation or church or religion. Those words were:
This does not mean creating a 'global super state' but continuing on the processes underway to increase democratic participation and promote political transparency and accountibility.
Until human beings recognize that the disconnects between their beliefs, words and actions create the confusion and dysfunction rife in todays world (much of it because we can now learn of it through the progress of technology) we are going to be stuck right where we are or sink even lower.
hehehehe
Don't communists and socialists get along?
But I'm not quite sure what you meant by the following:
You only harm yourself and the Body of Christ when your natural and supernatural body and soul become separated and start to fragment.
Are you saying that unless my union with Christ takes place along side the fellowship of other Christians, my soul will begin to atrophy? And if so, can you elaborate?
It really is good of you to reach out to me in the way that you did; it is very Christ like.
