I wonder how long he was planning this....while choosing a name for their unborn son?

I wonder how long he was planning this....while choosing a name for their unborn son? He's a horrible, monstrous man. A cold and heartless bastard of the greatest magnitude.
Can there be a jury anywhere...even in California...that would acquit him?

I think what happened is they had a big blow-out, over either his infidelity(ies) or his desire to not be home/around Laci and her family when he should be home and around Laci.
Holiday's have a way of bringing things to a head. And since he was sneaking around, the resulting tensions might well have exploded in angry confrontation.
Somebody might have threatened to leave the relationship, either Laci or Scott. More likely she confronted him, he tried to not discuss anything and she (naturally) wouldn't back off. So, enraged at being caught, first he pops her, then he beats her up and then he kills her.
And then, he tries to get away with it.
Premeditation might have been necessary, perhaps the evidence will show it. His double life is creepy enough, but It's his "Sopranos" fascination is REALLY creepy in hindsight.
It must have at least occurred to him that he might be rid of responibilities related to his marriage and impending fatherhood, by killing her and hiding the body.
Whether he didn't want to pay the way divorce would make him pay, or didn't want to go to jail for beating up his pregnant wife, I don't know, but he is one cold, selfish, depraved and disgusting human being.
