I just discussed this with my almost 20 year old daughter. We agreed that we would stand by our guilty child if they killed someone, but we wouldn't be out there defending the indefensible or lying about it or blaming other people. We would hire a good lawyer and stay by their side during the trial. We would visit them in jail. But we would not try to get them off with murdering their spouse and child. We would still love our guilty child. But we would keep our mouths shut about the case.

We agreed that we would stand by our guilty child if they killed someone I wouldn't although I will acknowledge that it may be a natural inclination. I would want my child to pay their debt to society. It's a cliche, but actions have consequences ... and people have responsiblity. If you do the crime, you do the time.

Exactly. There's a tasteful (and more productive) way to handle the position in which the elder Petersons now find themselves. And what they're doing ain't it!
