I personally know SBC missionaries. In fact, I receive regular email updates from a missionary family in Africa that was part of my old church in PA.
I can tell you that the explicit and implied fears concerning SBC involvement are unfounded. The family I mentioned is working in a heavily Muslim area. They have been welcomed in many towns by the Islamic leader of the town and in once case, they received a goat as a present. This Islamic leader praised their work and actually asked if they wanted to convert to Islam because they were living their lives as a good muslim should (traveling around serving others in the name of God).
I would also point out that the SBC is part of the Red Cross disaster relief effort in this country that has been authorized by Congress. In times of disaster, they mobilize thousands of men with the responsibility of providing emergency meals. The SBC had people on the ground in New York on 9/12/01 and by the time they closed up shop several months later, they had served something like 700,000 meals. Most people don't know about their work because they don't go around crowing about it.
By forcefully flaunting there new found abilities, they will bring about bad feelings. There are plenty of places to go besides Iraq.
