better than Washington or Texas

HEY NOW! We got some damned good wines over here in Texas! Don't know about that Washington stuff so can't comment on it.

I am waiting with anticipation for new years eve. The selection by caterers and party planers will be most telling.

Fortunately, for wine drinkers, there has never been better times. An enormous variety of good quality wines can be had for reasonable prices. Even if one drinks only wines made by the United States and its allies, there are more fine wines than one could possibly discover in a lifetime. Australia, Spain, Italy, Portugal, New Zealand, all these countries produce an enormous amount of fine wines. Of course, the United States itself is now the 4th largest producer of wine in the world and we are climbing fast as wineries expand outside California to 40 other states.

I'm very fond of Texas wines - we even drive to Texas to buy them at the H.E.B. - but I think Australian riesling is better.

CapRock is my favorite Texas winery.

I've gone back to what I drank in college. Thunderbird, Mad Dog 20/20 and Richard's Wild Irish Rose. Little did I know that the old men who drank the same thing beside the train depot would become the darlings of the Left. We used to call them bums, but now they are the sainted "homeless".

United States boycott of its wines in retaliation for opposition to the US-led war on Iraq,

I with they would get this right. It is NOT because of opposition. It is because of the backstabbing, nasty, heavy handed behind the scenes machinations of the French. And just for good measure, the snobby attitute that we have put up with for years, but no longer wish to.

Don't you have to buy it before you can dump it out on TV?

"What we fear and what is already having direct effect is a boycott not of consumers but of distributors amidst very heavy competition," said Louis-Regis Affre of the French wine and spirt export federation.

What a maroon! Does he really think that distributors would not buy the product if the consumers wanted it?

Earth to Frenchie: Distibutors are not buying your wine because comsumers are not buying it and they cannot move it. Distributors are most definately not going to float your economy!

Do you recall Annie Greensprings? Boone's Farm was the rage till Annie came out. Hadn't thought about that in years.

You know...I tried something different when my old wristwatch finally gave out, and it's been a real hoot. I did a Yahoo search for antique pocketwatches, and I picked up a really nice pocketwatch made in 1901 (Hampden Special Railway, in a hunter case made in 1948). It took a while to get in the habit of winding it every day, though it's not all that bad. I wind it when I get up and when I go to sleep, FAR more than is necessary (it'll run for up to 40 hours or so on a full wind). It doesn't keep PERFECT time, but synchronizing it every week or every other week seems to work just fine. For a chain, I went to a local jewelry store and bought an 18k chain, and they put watch parts on for me.

The whole deal was rather expensive ($550 for the watch and $400 for the chain), but the quality of the watch (a railroad watch is made to exacting specifications) is excellent, and I figure it should last quite a while, since it's already lasted over a hundred years. It's also nice not having to contend with a wristwatch, which is painful when you're a guy and have moderately hairy arms :)

That map is the funniest thing I have seen in a long time. Hubby and I just laughed and laughed as we read it. It is now being forwarded to just about everyone I know.

Thanks for the chuckles!
