Good Morning.

This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - Situation Room - LIVE THREAD.

It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.

Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A brief description of what the graphic is would help!  If you post graphics, please "size" them so that our browsers continue to load the rest of the thread!

Very selective nukes, right. We make sure the fallout only falls out on the enemy troops.

The ONLY reason that SAddam even let the inspectors back in was because of the presence of the big US military on his front porch. Does your friend expect the US taxpayer to foot the bill for keeping that size force around Iraq, and less available for other possible deployments if needed for three years?? Not to mention about the psychological effect on the troops of that sort of silliness.

I don't and never will understand libs.

They should close the roundabout to vehicular traffic as a defense against car bombs.

I'm outta here for the day. Got to get some work done and my house looks like it should be in some Baghdad bombed-out neighborhood.

I can't express how much I've treasured the company of the good people on this thread for the last 3 weeks!

I'll miss all of you for the next day or two. Ping me if something critical (or funny) is happening. OK?

Remember Michael Wolff of the CentCom fame--What's the purpose of these press conferences? To which he received a round of applause from the pantywaist pressies.

Here he is justifying his existence:

I was only asking

My question, was met with a sudden, disruptive, even slightly anarchic, round of applause - not dissimilar to the whoops when a kid drops a tray in the school cafeteria - and I knew I was in a little trouble.

The question it turned out, spoke powerfully to people who think this whole thing (not just the news conference, but, in some sense, the entire war) is phony, a set-up, a fabrication, in which just about everything is in service to unseen purposes and agendas (hence my popularity in Turkey, France, Canada, and Italy, as well as among the reporters in the Doha press pool). But it seemed to speak even more dramatically to people who think the whole thing is real, pure, linear, uncomplicated, elemental. For the former I'd addressed something like the existential issue of our own purposelessness, but for the latter, I seem to have, heretically, raised the very issue of meaning itself.

And, seriously compounding matters, there was the rude applause. It must have seemed like media types were clapping their own smartness, or smartassness. By acknowledging the uselessness of these ritualised proceedings, and therefore, the artifice, we media people suddenly seemed like a thing apart - apart from the war, and from our audience (and hence, from our country too - at least we American media people).

He is truly a clymer.

Everybody, I have such wonderful News! I finally decided to switch over to Direct TV and tomorrow it is to be installed! I'll be able to get FNC finally and will block CNN from the first day!! Haaaa. I'll also send them one last scathing email. And I'll have a wonderful time letting the cable company know, in three words Fox News Channel, why I'm discontinueing their service. (Prairie grins mischeiviously)

I'll prolly leave MSNBC on, because of Scarbourough. But I'm excited.

I honestly don't know what my friend thinks/expects. I don't know how two people can hear Bush, Rumsfeld, Myers, Franks, Brooks, etc. say, time after time, that the Iraqi people will be creating their own government... and one person (me) believes them, and the other person believes it's all a scam to get an American Annex in the middle east.

Just one example that every Liberal in the world brings up about the huge conspiracy thing: The Halliburton contract to put out the oil well fires. Well, as I've mentioned here before, I'm a Geologist. Others on here can tell you this same thing: Putting out an oil well fire is a HIGHLY SPECIALIZED ORDEAL, and there probably aren't more than a handful of companies in the WORLD that can do it. So my perspective on that is "so what if Cheney has ties to Halliburton!" I don't know if Halliburton is the BEST, or the CHEAPEST, or the ONLY one with the necessary resources to handle a potential 1000+ wellhead fires, but I would stake my life on it that there aren't very darn many companies that could handle a project of that magnitude. And it would be unfair to the Iraqi people to EXclude Halliburton from the project simply because of Cheney's connection.

so then my friend brings up the issue of running the port at Umm Qsar... "Is running a port a highly specialized skill? The Iraqis want to go back to work and operate the port, but we have told them no..." Sheesh... how about we make sure it's safe first? How about we know who the bad guys are and who the good guys are before we let them take over something as VITAL as the ports?

From what I can tell, the root of all of his beefs stems from reading the documents on the Project for the New American Century ( http://www.newamericancentury.org/ ). And for that, I definitely don't have a rebuttal.

The distance limits placed on the Iraqi missiles would prevent Iraq from hitting Israel. During the Gulf War, Israel engaged in self-restraint, protected by our patriot missiles.

Everyone knows that Israel would have retaliated if Iraq made a move on them at any period after the Gulf War, and with the patriots, chances are, the debris would have landed in Palestine and/or Jordan or in their own lap.

I have no doubt that Saddam wanted Palestine (associated with the conquests of Saladin) and has worked closely with Arafat. Interestingly, a letter written by one of Saddam's sons and just found among his papers, verifies Saddam's intention to takeover Palestine after Kuwait.
