Good Morning.

This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - Situation Room - LIVE THREAD.

It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.

Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A brief description of what the graphic is would help!  If you post graphics, please "size" them so that our browsers continue to load the rest of the thread!

To all who helped this get started and keep it running, thank you!

Special thanks to Null and Void for keeping these threads running on the weekends, Mo1 for the screamer, the AdminMods for their tolerance, mhking for the video links, Ragtime Cowgirl for her Exclusive Live Transcription Service™, Fledermaus for his 15 minutes of fame, and, of course, Belly Girl...

Actually it seems to be the US is letting things get out of control a bit first, so they can step in and bring order. That will reduce the complaining about what the US is doing to maintain order.

Hi, Timeout! Tax time bites, we did ours last weekend, too.

President Bush and the First Lady are going to visit wounded troops at Walter Reed Army Medical Center today (may have already, I'm not sure).

Fighting goes on in Tikrit.

The Army is testing trucks for possible WMD.

There are some Ministry buildings on fire in Baghdad.

Comparatively, the Iraqis seem relatively sedate

I think I understand the mindset too...

1) Under Saddam, anything worth a flip went to Ba'athists. They are taking some of that back. 2) They are poor. There is stuff. They're grabbing it. 3) They have not been living under a system where there was a rule of law. The trouble is when people who weren't guilty get looted and brutalized. I understand the military not wanting to get into clamping down too hard but it DOES need to stop. For one thing we need those government computers back so we can see what's on them. Tapping Kurds to be the police outside the Kurdish territory is probably unworkable. Too many would want to kill them just for being Kurdish. Tapping former cops and army for police has possibilities but you CAN'T put former Ba'athists out there. That's just going to make things worse.

We have a free press and they are free to look stupid during briefings. We'd even let a reporter ask the Hong Kong CENTCOM reporter's question: Which town does the US plan to retreat to?

What gives? Linda Vester just said the truck with the false paneling Rick found yesterday turned out to be nothing. Anyone have details on this?

"So if they were that weak, where we could just roll over them like that, tell me again how he was such a big threat in the past?" the senator added.

He and Nancy Pelosi need to get thier heads out of thier butts.

It's like a street gang or the mafia-- you can't be a member until you commit crimes. I don't think the UN Iraqi ambassador is clean either.

Without the good humor and sense of Freepers, I'd be at risk of whining-wanker status w/ my daily press rants. (^;

Yeah, TomGuy is right. Edwards, Lieberman and Gephardt were on the right side of history. Kerry could have been, but he basicly renounced his vote from last year.

I'm catching up myself, but one thing I would add is that Fox has exclusive video of more underground bunkers with munitions and a decontamination chamber.

Oh, and another school stocked to the rafters with same.

Nothing ruled out yet as WMD as far as I can tell. Testing continues.

Looting is the obsession of the media at the moment because they think it reflects poorly on the mission. Dr. Bob on MSNBC just said a little while ago (and he isn't the only one to have pointed this out) that the looting is very specific and confined to government and UN facilities. Not the small business guy.

She did? Rick was reporting earlier (and interviewing the Marine Intel Officer) that NUMEROUS trucks of the exact same type were found.
