Military to Tap Interim Rulers [POWELL says US, not UN!]
Los Angeles Times ^ | 4/10/03 | Robin Wright

WASHINGTON -- Secretary of State Colin L. Powell said Wednesday that the U.S. military will select emerging leaders in postwar Iraq to help create a new Interim Iraqi Authority to replace Saddam Hussein, but the United Nations will not play a leading role in the political transformation.

..."We believe that the coalition, having invested this political capital and life and treasure into this enterprise, we are going to have a leading role for some time as we shape this process. The people of Iraq will have confidence in us because of who we are and what we've done," Powell said in an interview with The Times [emphasis added by BibChr].

Thanks. I don't see anything offensive there.

It's too bad some Conservatives believe everything they read about Powell and jump all over him the first chance they get. They're falling into the trap the meida RATS have set for them. The RATS want to create this impression of division within the Administration, and I'm sure they'd love nothing more than if Powell left.

Tried telling that to some on this forum? There are several here who would qualify for this advice.

"The suggestion that some of my colleagues would give that now that the coalition has done all of this and liberated Iraq, thank you very much, step aside and the Security Council is now going to become responsible for everything, is incorrect. And they know it. And they were told it," Powell said.

LOL! This is terrific.....I am thrilled about this!

Absolutely, only I would phrase it --

It is our OBLIGATION to see to it that those who have demonstrated an indifference to Iraqi suffering, and shown support to the opressors of the Iraqi people, do not, in this fragile time, interfere as the people of Iraq begin to build for themselves a free nation, in a way that is in the best intersts of Iraqis.

Overall, I hate to say it, but this is the first time since the Cuban Missle Crises that I can truly say "I AM PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN."

I always hope God Blesses America - maybe he might be doing just that - as long as we get rid of that neo Nazi / Communist abortion on demand.

One of the striking things about seeing our Army and Marines up close and personal in this war is how genuinely diverse - in the good sense - our military is. We've got whites of all descriptions, blacks, Latinos from Mexico, Central and South America, American Indians, Asians, even Arabs. But they're all Americans who work together and share the same values of duty, honor, country. This must impress the Iraqis who see, as it were, all the nations of the earth coming to liberate them under one flag, the Stars and Stripes. I know it impresses the hell out of me.

Actually Blair cut them short the other day saying:

The Iraqi Government is to be set up by the Iraqi people, not the coalition or the UN.

He sidestepped the issue of the interim government, but that's a short-term issue anyway.

in the best intersts of Iraqis.

Well, on further reflection, maybe I would say "interests" instead of "intersts."

Hard Path Ahead

Ancient hatreds hide
Under flowing robes
Sins of the past
Stain many clothes

Subterfuge tunnels
Under shaky ground
Serpent's words
Can be a soothing sound

Pitfalls line
Our dusty way
Caution must be
The rule of the day

Sunnis and Kurds
Turks and Shiites
If we're not careful
There'll be bloody fights

Great wisdom will be needed
To show us the way
For Free Iraq
To see the light of day

One day it's 'god bless Powell', the next it's 'Powell has to go'. People need to stop believing everything they read about Powell and listen more to what he actually says. In the LA Times interview Powell NEVER said the UN would have a 'central' role or would take over for the Coalition post-war. But the Newsmax headline would have you believe he wants to turn everything over to the UN ASAP. So WE help create an interim Iraqi government and ask the UN to recognize it as a legitimate government. Is that such a big deal? As long as the UN isn't the body creating this government, I don't see a problem.
