WASHINGTON -- Secretary of State Colin L. Powell said Wednesday that the U.S. military will select emerging leaders in postwar Iraq to help create a new Interim Iraqi Authority to replace Saddam Hussein, but the United Nations will not play a leading role in the political transformation.
..."We believe that the coalition, having invested this political capital and life and treasure into this enterprise, we are going to have a leading role for some time as we shape this process. The people of Iraq will have confidence in us because of who we are and what we've done," Powell said in an interview with The Times [emphasis added by BibChr].

In regard to the looting - we should hire Iraqis to perform law enforcement and security jobs. I'm sure there will be no lack of qualified volunteers after a few more days of this - they might even organize themselves. I hear that some private shop keepers are defending their property with firearms. This is a crash course in the responsibilities of freedom.

God bless Colin Powell! He has stepped forward now to be united with our President at just the right time with just the right words. Thank you, Secretary Powell! I share your positive sentiments, but would argue that he was always united with the president. He didn't say one thing that was not the wishes of this president. It is the job of Secretary of State to hold the door open for diplomacy until all hope has faded, not to make war. War is Rummy's job. We need both a Rummy and a Powell.
Iraq is full of people who hate each other. Sometimes miracles happen and people can unite over the victory of a common enemy they all hate, but when they sit down tomorrow and try to actually figure out what to do next, it will not be smooth. They will need a mediator of incredible skill to work this out. Prayers for Colin Powell are needed now. I am glad he is with us (just try to imagine his predecessor).

Well - agreed - he has done his job and done it well. I am not against Sec of State Powell. I am very grateful he is on the right team. And I am very glad he is not President. Others who admire him wish he were. I do not.
