Good Morning.
This is the Daily Thread of Operation Iraqi Freedom - Situation Room - LIVE THREAD.
It is designed for general conversation about the events of the day. In depth discussion of events should be left to individual threads - but links to the threads or other articles is highly encouraged. This allows us to stay abreast of the situation in general, while also providing a means of obtaining specific information.
Please have mercy on us dial up limited FReepers! Limit the big graphics, post links instead. A brief description of what the graphic is would help! If you post graphics, please "size" them so that our browsers continue to load the rest of the thread!

Kurds take Kirkuk: BBC
April 10 2003
London
US-backed Kurdish forces have captured the northern Iraqi oil capital of Kirkuk, British and Turkish television reported today, with the Turkish report saying that looting had broken out in the city.
"Kurdish fighters are firing into the air to celebrate their victory. Residents of Kirkuk have spilled into the streets in jubilation," correspondent Nevin Sungur of the Turkish television channel NTV said in a live telephone report from the city.
"People have started looting," she said, adding that Iraqi forces had fled the city without fighting.
"It seems like Kirkuk has fallen," said the BBC's correspondent, Dumeeth Luthra, though the BBC added on its teletext service that US military spokesmen could not confirm the report.
And a Sky News television correspondent, reporting live from northern Iraq, said Kurdish forces had entered Kirkuk from the south and west.

Tangent: If you're feeling too upbeat about everything today and need a little grounding and re-orienting, a little tempering of the jubilation, nothing works better than a stop by http://www.michaelmoore.com ... have your barf bag ready. Okay, let me catch up, was busy discussing talking MOABs on another thread.

It must be true since this site, english.aljazeera.net, is saying that... ROFLOL!
Kirkuk and surrounding towns fall to US and Kurds
Unconfirmed reports suggest that Kurdish soldiers are in the centre of Kirkuk, a likely source of tension for the Turkish government and another nail in the coffin of Saddam Husseins government.
Fawzi Hariri, a spokesman for the Kurdistan Democratic Party, said "We believe the report to be inaccurate." He said KDP officials were making further checks. However, a BBC correspondent claimed that Kurdish troops were in the centre of the city.
Only one oil well is known to have been set alight so far and there are widespread reports of Iraqi soldiers and officers fleeing. The little resistance that still exists is being put up by Baath Party members. Reports of looting in the very centre of the city can not yet be confirmed either.

Thought the ships had unloaded and started to reload and agree as soon as the Iraqis heard it, they sent more troops south. They thought we'd stop and fight them down south which would have split up our train. We waved and then sent in units sufficient to do the job. Despite the media, the service will provide us with legitimate reports and photos.

I wish he would come out with a woman a make me a big fat liar. Then I could get the other image out of my mind everytime I see him.

They do this to us every day. News BREAKS just MINUTES before the CentCom briefing. Then the journalists ask CentCom about it, and they always say "this information is just coming in, so we have no information on it at this time."
And then the next day, the journalists have forgotten all about it, so they NEVER ask the followup question "Soooo? What did you find out about thus-and-so??"
So you can bet we'll see the journalists ask about Kirkuk this morning, and you can bet the answer is "I won't comment on ongoing operations." :-)
To: oceanperch
I agree with the rumor part you mentioned. ONE person said something on this thread and got everyone going. I prefer my news a little "harder" than that.

During the Centcom briefing FOX is putting on their banner "Bush to Iraqis: Your country will soon be free", and other such messages.

Good question from the Italian about interim government.
Gen. Renuart telling about how interim will be ordered.
I wonder if Koffee and Chiraq are paying attention.
To: oceanperch
I don't think this is the thread to to be discussing a news anchors lifestyle. The man's life is his own business...and his alone.
