Under Fire: U.S. Marines of the 3rd battalion, 4th regiment, take position after they were fired on by an Iraqi sniper on the main road to Baghdad, some six miles from the Iraqi capital, on Saturday.

What constitutes a hero?
I have heard PFC Lynch described as a hero. Not to diminish at all what she has gone through in the support of this war and our country, because I feel that ALL who are serving honorably in whatever capacity it may be in our military deserve our respect and 100% support. But how do we define what constitutes a hero? Is it all who are serving in the military, those who are in the theater of combat, all who are injured in combat, those who are taken as POWs, those killed in the line of service accidentally or those killed in action? Or is it more narrowly defined as those who put their lives at risk DIRECTLY in the line of duty. It is just my opinion here, but I think the term hero is being tossed around a bit loosely. I believe the Special Operatives who rescued the girl ARE heroes. They went in to rescue her with the knowledge that there were 41 fedayeen waiting there for them. The success rate of these missions is NOT high, at all. They knew that there was a significant chance that they would be killed. The Iraqi who provided the information to the US soldiers did so in what may go down as one of the most altruistic acts on the part of the Iraqi people in this war. He walked 24 miles even going back to surveil the hospital and draw maps to support the mission at great peril; if he was caught he would most certainly have his tongue cut out and bleed to death; probably in front of his family. There was absolutely nothing for him to gain from this and everything to lose. PFC Lynch was in a support vehicle that made a wrong turn and was captured, an error which cost all of the others their lives. We have heard details of what happened from 'unnamed officials' saying that she was shot and stabbed as well as that she shot the Iraqis until she ran out of ammo. Now it is being revised to say that there are no stab or bullet wounds. If this has been incorrectly reported, how reliable is the report that she confronted the Iraqis as reported. I don't know what to believe now. Maybe she did, maybe not. But whoever made that original report was not doing anyone a favor in reporting the info based on erroneous data. When the Seals arrived, she had the bedsheets pulled over her; that is about all we know. She deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. She has served our country and was treated brutally, no question. But is she a hero? When the term hero comes up I think of John Basilone. Before responding, take a look at his bio. FoxNews reporting David Bloom (NBC embedded) apparently died this morning of non-combat health problem. So sad.

During slow persons of news, be sure to check out Iraqi TV on realplay. It can be a hoot at times. It can also be aggravating.

Per Bob Arnot MSNBC: Big find of SA6 missiles by our military. He said this is the first time we have seen these and they pose a threat to our planes.

Just heard David Bloom died! Embolism in lung. What a shock since he was only 39. Maybe he was sitting too long as they were riding along.

There sure is a lot of traffic on the bagcams. I read that there was a 6PM-6AM curfew. Guess the message didn't get out.
