I only remember that the report was early on, perhaps from in & around Basra. Someone spotted an Iraqi (probably fedayeen) on top of a farm building using flag signals to another unit. I remember telling my hubby, "there's one signal we can't tap electronically."

Last night, Mo saw, several times, flags in round about; Mo was thinking the flags (and horns honking) were being used as some kind of signal....this was occurring just about the time when Greg Kelly and Ollie had entered the city

Although HUMINT is traditionally more effective at this sort of thing...But put a pair of cams on him and hook it up to a program derived from the likes of this.

Gesture Recognition is mostly focused on sign language, I bet flags are easier. Unfortunately "flag signal", "semaphore", etc are widely overloaded terms in computer hardware and software, I couldn't find a quick reference to any machine vision systems for flag recognition.

Oooooh, that gives me an idea...off to the arms races....
