Turkey is one of the most important "strategic" countries in the world. Personally, I would love to make a move to locate major US forces there rather than other Western Europe countries, since the demise of the Soviet Union. I was really hoping there would be a strong alliance with them for the WASH, but that didn't work out, largely due to the timing of their internal politics.

Agreed. An essentially new government got hit with a crisis decision and they screwed the pooch. Now we'll have to see what can be salvaged.

Several weeks back, there was talk of a Nafta-type alliance with Turkey and "New Europe"...the former soviet states...and one could probably now add Iraq to the equation.
Screw France & the E.U. They've done nothing but put our troops in more danger than was necessary. Once the truth comes out about the arms flowing into Iraq, France will be "pate"---stuffed goose.
