March 30, 2003 -- TV networks in the Arab world gloat as they broadcast pictures of American prisoners executed by Saddam's thugs. They report every Iraqi lie as if it contains unassailable truth, while mocking each report of allied success. They promise their viewers Iraq is winning the war.

We need to pray that God will shine some light down upon the Islamics, who are just so full of hatred, that they can hardly exist. This hatred has been since Abraham, Isaac and Ishmael, and it did not even begin with Israel as a state. Muslims teach hated to their children in a steady diet. I think that only God can help. I think about myself, and I ask myself, where would I be if born in an Arab country? It is sobering.

Good article, but he completely misses one of the reasons for arab failure. Islam and Sharia law which oppresses women, free speech, free thought, and any type of religion that is not Islam.

Islam condones murder, slavery, and abject submission of its subjects. Until Islam is rejected, or utterly reformed they will never emerge into modern nations. Islam has no hierarchy also, which means most mullahs and imams and ayotollah's are just little hitler wanna-be's, power hungry, filled with desire for power, and hateful of anyone who does not follow thier fatwahs. Until these menaces are dealth with, nothing will change.

My daughter and I discussed ways to deter harboring hatred for the atrocities committed against the Troops. Why,because hatred blinds ands eats and destroys one.I loved the column and agree the preaching of hatred is destroying the believers in fantasy theology.

This is a great article isn't it! If we do our duty in Iraq, mind our stewardship responsibilities and keep thetreacherous French, Germans, and Russians from playing games with this so oppressed people becoming free, it is actually our nation that will benefit. It will not be easy for this people in Iraq to learn self governance, but it holds the best hope for winning the long war against terrorism. Our stewardship in Iraq, not over Iraq, will make or break the future of perhaps the entire world.

So true. Iran, for one, cannot stand having a democratic Iraq. Syrian oppression of their population will stand out like a sore thumb. And Osama will be fit to be tied that his dream of a totalitarian theocracy in Iraq is in doubt. That adds up to a lot of Hezbollah, Hamas, and al Qaeda hatred of a free Iraq.

There is a saying that if a war lasts long enough, the enemies come to resemble each other. The greatest triumph that the Arabs have achieved over Israel is to raise in them a tithe of the hatred that they themselves possess. It is as if, by contagion, the Arab world has managed to transform the Jewish dream into a thing of barbed wire, armored bulldozers and punitive strikes.

The most terrible of the ancient Mesopotamian demons was Pazuzu, the wind demon, who had "the power to spread loathsome diseases with his dry fiery breath". We laugh. But a viral idea composed of pure hatred, whose texts are "gruesome fairy tales for adults", spread by whisper and proclamation, has the power to take shape and destroy lofty towers in downtown Manhattan on a bright autumn day.

If we are not to suffer the fate of Israel and become a monstrous parody of our former selves; if America is to return her strength to the exploration of the stars and not towards discovering every darker engines of destruction, we must transform the Arab world. We must meet Pazuzu in the sandstorm and vanquish him.

Great article into "why they hate us". My question and none of the talking heads on the tv seem to be asking is---
We will liberate Iraq , no doubt, but what next???
If we build a democracy who will the people vote in eventually??? Will it be a Muslim fundalmentalist who they look to for spiritual guidance?? My biggest fear is that these people have no idea what democracy means and we are about to hand it to them. Democracy comes with a big responsiblity. We who read Freepers know this--news media can be biased and political leaders are not always what they seem, however we constantly look for the truth. Iraqis don't know what is real any more after being surpressed and lied to for decades. Only death is real there, and how will they be able to trust us and our government to rebuild them. So what is next??? If anyone sees any articles into this question please post them I am very curious to hear some view points.

The most important thing for Americans to grasp about the impotent fury of the Arab world is that it isn't really about us. It's about their own internal demons.

I look at this from a libertarian point of view. They have every right to scream and kick and swing their fist, but if that fist keeps popping our nose, we should reserve the right to blow their heads off with however big a bomb we need to make it stop.

The article omits the fact that notwithstanding the shortcomings of the Arab world, it is expanding fast. Within another generation or so, France and Belgium and several other European countries will be part of the Arab world.

The best we can do - even for the Arabs - is to get on with America's agenda of liberation.

The most important thing for Americans to grasp about the impotent fury of the Arab world is that it isn't really about us. It's about their own internal demons[, ... and are] symptoms of a once-great culture's moral desolation, of the comprehensiveness of Arab failure.

Certainly true. I agree wholeheartedly that this next 5-7 years is going to make or break the future of the entire world, and have been preaching that to folks here. I'm not expecting it to be as difficult as you are, though, for the good Iraqis "to learn self governance" (I've known quite a few, 12-20, in my life.)

One of the unrecognized tragedies of saddam's reign of terror and totalitarian grip is that an entire generation of Iraqi minds have been poisoned. Re-educating that vast score of deluded young minds will be formidable.

It isn't going to be easy, and it is going to take years, not months.

Not true. It will take decades. But it's still worth it.

That's what frightens me. With the way our political process is set up, plus the nature of the Arabs themselves, will we have the dedication to stand over these people for the two or three generations needed to make sure they don't have relapses?
