60 Minutes: Now I Know Why I Am Here
60 Minutes ^ | Tonight | 60 Minutes

Wow. 60 Minutes is showing the liberation of Umm Qasr. The people are thrilled. They are getting water. Thanking the reporters.

One soldier or Marine was in near tears saying that he felt joy and that now he knows why he is there.

Amazing piece for CBS. Surprising.

Stunningly upbeat.

Hard to hold back tears as the Marine thinks about his niece and nephew back home.

The Embeddeds must be driving their editors nuts right about now.

Yeah, saw that. Pretty amazing. You can't tell me there won't be dancing in the streets of Baghdad when our tanks come rolling triumphantly through.

Some amazing footage.

Why isn't the NEWS covering this . Guess it would be to positive and they wouldn't be able to badger Bush with it.

Just saw the same report; very interesting when compared to most of the news I've been seeing of how the Iraqis don't really want us there.

It appears that the people of Umm Qasr are already losing their fear of the regime, even though, as the report suggests, operatives are still milling about the crowd. (And oh by the way, Saddam shut off the water to Umm Qasr 4 days before the war started.)

It was nice to see such big smiles on the people's faces. Just wait until the Galahad docks and they see some real relief supplies.

A bit chilling to hear the statement from the Iraqi who wouldn't appear on camera. He said "there are detectives everywhere." There is still an iron fist over the country, but it was a great story overall. It made you proud of our country and our war fighters!

I saw that, it was an amazingly fair and balanced piece. The Marine getting teary eyed at the end was great! I thought I had stumbled onto Fox news instead. Got to give CBS credit for this one.

When good men finally find the courage to opposes evil no matter the cost, the results are glorious.

Our prayers for the people of Iraq are coming to fruition, thank God.

I just think there is a lag between the editors who haven't taken fire with the troops and the embeddeds that have.

Once these guys share the bonding of taking a hit in the field, these stories will be more ubiquitous.

The editors are still whining from DC and complaining about the lack of humanitarian aid.

This gets so tiresome. Where the hell do you think this came from?

Was the war correspondent Scott Pelley? I saw he is an embedded reporter on a thread here the other day. Pelley's interviews of President Bush were good, especially the piece he put together of September 11. Any word on rebroadcast?

"Reporter said they were the first free citizens of Iraq. "

This was a great report.

And did you see the Andy Rooney 60 minutes essay blasting the French?

I watched the last 15 minutes of Tom Brokaw this evening before 60 minutes and wanted to gag. When I turned to 60 minutes I was prepared to barf but was stunned by what I saw and heard. This type of reporting by CBS would drive me to quit railing on them. I just this moment heard Rather remark that some Iraqis have just begun to enjoy freedom and that a lot more would be looking for the same (paraphrased). Simply astounding for CBS

I was at work today and away from the tube, but one news break on the radio (CBS, I'm pretty sure) said that the people were cheering, but the cameraman spoke Arabic and interpreted their cheers later as "We love Saddam, we will die for him...." on and on ad nauseum. I remain unconvinced that this happened. I AM happy to hear about this piece, though. Sorry I missed it. If anyone has the video of it, please ping me. Thanks!
