Uprising By Shiites in Basra Underway; British Pouring Artillery into City

Just monitored on Sky News: embedded reporter says Shiites in Basra have begun, in his words, a "popular uprising" against the Saddam forces still in the city. British Army units are "pouring" artillery into the city (likely isolated areas) preparing to move in.

Even when confronted with the obvious truth, they'll contort themselves into pretzels to come up with an explanation to fit their simple-minded anti-American biased theory.

One guy said he'll believe the BBC reporters but not the American ones. Then "OOOPS", the BBC is reporting the same shelling of civilians by the Iraqi goons, that the U.S. media is, and Simple-Simon is completely lost.

Maybe he can get Al Jazeera where he lives.

US drops 1000-pound bomb on Basra targets

US and British forces have been battling to take control of the southern Iraqi city of Basra. An American warplane reportedly dropped 1000-pound bombs on targets where weapons were being stored. Other targets included buildings thought to be used by Iraqi fighters still defending Iraq's second-largest city. There were also reports of a civilian uprising against Saddam Hussein in Basra, but the Iraqi information minister has denied these claims. On the humanitarian front, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Tuesday that its staff had reached the main pumping station in Basra and were trying to restore water supplies there as quickly as possible. The water shortages in the town had prompted the ICRC to warn that civilians there were facing a "humanitarian crisis."

Actually, under provisions of the Patriot Act, the "Know your Customer" program that was defeated under Clinton, has been implemented in full.

Every electronic transaction coming into or going out of the bank for every customer is now recorded and made available to the government ... regardless of size.

I battled AT&T cable for years. Then about 3 years ago, I ordered Dish and cancelled my cable. The best move I have made. AT&T in many areas is ruled by their local manager. Ours was a hostile ? female two counties away.

It doesn't have to say money.

You hvae a right to privacy regarding your personal effects, unless there is probable cause of enough veracity to have a warrant issued by a judge.

Probable cause means some specific facts that tie you to a specific crime ... not some vague thing that says you mightn be involved in criminal activity if you transfer X amouint of money ... or in today's world, if you cary X amount of money with you. A judge then reviews the specific facts and decides if it is warranted. If it is, he signs it and a warrant is issued. That leads to the search and the meddling by the government at that point for good and proper cause.

The actions beinmg discussed do not fit into that in the least. They are blanket intrusions into everyone's rights without such process being accomplished. Ultimately they will prove dangerous to us all. As Jefferson said, "Those who give up essential liberty for security end up losing both".

So, these rights are being pushed aside under the color of law, but they are being pushed aside just the same.

One of the early Supreme Court Chief Justices stated that any Act of Congress, repugnant to the Constitution was null and void. They can only be null and void if the people recognize their loss and stand up to it.

Don't get me wrong. We must fight the terrorist threat and the nations that support them. We must secure our borders and not hamstring law enforcement.

You don't do that by putting the clamp down on every citizen. You do that by focusing on the specific problems and making sure we are able to speedily investigate, prosecute and punish the criminal using probable cause, warrants, speedy trial by jury and then swift judgement and execution of that judgement ... all the while retaining our rights in the process.

I think CNN sucks.. (scuse the crudeness of my language.. but they do) and Fox is doing a really good job. CNN seems to almost WANT us to fail!!

Also, it's almost like they have sympathy for Saddam. Can't explain it.. but they are constantly negative in their coverage of how well we are doing. I go over to their station on occassion during something big that is breaking..and am appalled at their coverage.

Deplorable, but doesn't that just mean fewer POW's we have to feed? Doesn't that just help us, I mean fewer troops to deal with?

If the Iraqi regulars start believing US soldiers will shoot them on surrender, they will stop surrendering and fight to the death. While this resistance may not amount to much, it will add to the US casualty list and cause trouble during the reconstruction as some Iraqis will believe the US guilty.
