After watching so many cruise missiles hit the government area in Bhagdad, I wonder why they didn't put up an array of barrage balloons to protect against low flying craft. They worked fairly well in London during WWII to protect the government buildings and Buckingham palace, (excepting a couple of minor hits), and I'd bet since the cruise missiles are flying a contour of the earth flight plan at about 200 ASL, they'd have some trouble negotiating their way around hundreds of cables tethered to balloons at varying altitudes. I'm glad they didn't, but I wonder why they didn't?

The navy is in fact working on a high tech version of these balloons to counteract cruise missle barrages.
