Attack Injures 10 U.S. Troops in Kuwait

KUWAIT CITY - The camp of the 101st Airborne Division in Kuwait was attacked early Sunday with grenades and small arms fire, wounding 10, including six seriously, U.S. military officials said.

"From our reports it appears that a terrorist penetrated Camp Pennsylvania, one or more terrorists threw two hand grenades into a tent," said George Heath, spokesman at Fort Campbell, home base of the 101st.

He said 10 people were wounded, six seriously.

The injured were rushed to a field hospital but military officials had no word on their conditions, Lt. Cmdr. Charles Owens said from Camp As Sayliyah in Qatar.

The attack, which included small arms fire, happened at a rear base camp of the 101st, near the Iraqi border, U.S. military officials said.

The military did not identify the unit of the 101st that was in the camp but said it had been in Kuwait for about one week.

Most of the division has entered southern Iraq (news - web sites).

The attack was the fourth against Americans in Kuwait since October. Kuwait was the main launching point for the thousands of ground forces who have entered Iraq.

Three Kuwaitis were arrested last month on suspicion of planning terrorist attacks on U.S. forces.

The men were described as Muslim extremists who followed the principles of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden (news - web sites). The arrests followed several attacks against Americans in Kuwait.

On Jan. 21, Islamic extremists were blamed for killing a San Diego computer contractor and injuring another American close to Camp Doha, where U.S. forces are based.

A Kuwaiti policeman faces trial on charges of shooting and seriously wounding two U.S. soldiers on Nov. 21 after allegedly stopping their car on a highway.

In October, Muslim fundamentalists killed one U.S. Marine and injured another on a Kuwaiti island. Other Marines killed the gunmen, who were religious extremists.

Nope, I've tried it for 2 different locations and it doesn't seem to work for me anymore. Maybe there's a cap on the number of users that can download it?

Where did you get the info on the cop shooting them? Why would he be on the base? Not for security, I'm sure.

Iraqi Foreign Minister headed to Cairo to try to get the Arab nations to side with Iraq against us. Will Chirac and Kofi meet him there? Stay tuned.

The reason they are called "terrorist" attacks instead of "acts of war" is because the bombers weren't acting in the furtherence of any "state's" foreign policy.

Although you might call it "state sponsered terrorism" sometimes, most of these acts, whether they be on private property or on "state owned property", are committed by whacked out religious fanatics with an inkling of some sort of political agenda which can be exploited by those who really have a warped political and religious agenda rattling around in their otherwise empty head

Why would you think that a bombing of a hole in the side of a Navy Destroyer is more of an act of war than the preplanned flying of a bomb, (and that's what those 767s became as soon as "kamakazis" started flying them), into the side of a building filled with Americans and on American soil?

The difference in the taxonomy is predicated simply by who does the deed. If you are acting as an armed combattant fighting for the defacto foreign policy of an independent state, then you're the instrument of an act of war by that state. If you're doing it on your own, or with the aid of a quasi religious/political group of loonies who have no distict boundaries of legal jurisdiction, then you're a terrorist.
