Tori said the oil fires were meant to deceive public opinion as to the extent of damage by the coalition. The reporter suggested that because the Iraqis lit the fires at a time when no bombs were falling, "how stupid do they think the public is?"

The answer is in his question, media will take any image and buid a suitable (lie) around it.
