FOX NEWS has reported that Saddam is either dead or severely wounded as he was believed to be in the compound that was recently struch by B-117 bombers

You missed it, then. There have been and ARE many threads on FR, which go into exquiste details about ordinaces. Go read some. I get pinged to them , but since that isn't exactly my forte, I can't regurgitate the details, at will. I think it's a male thing, anyway. :-)

We did. We hit it again and again and again. It' my understanding that we hit it with cruise missles first and then with 2 or 3 bunker busters. We SLAMMED IT!

From what I understand about "Bunker Busters" is that they are designed to detonate once they reach a cavity under the ground. The cruise missile levels the building and the bunker buster comes in behind it and borroughs itself into the ground until it reaches the bunker cavity and blows up.

If a bunker buster was to hit a 2 or three floor building or a home, it would blow up after penetrating the first cavity it finds, unfortunately, that would be the next level down. I am no weapons expert by any means, But I would guess that the fuse on a bunker buster is activated when it makes contact with the ground and compresses, it detonates when it reaches a cavity and de-compresses. Therefore it would serve its purpose when having to pnetrate several levels of a building.

I am no expert on these types of weapons, but considering the way I have seen them used in the past, I would bet I'm close on how they work.

I hope someone is out there that can do a more informed explanation than I did on how they function. I'm relying on memory that's not all that clear :-)

I had heard that they used the cruise missiles first to "clean" off the site for the bunker busters. That would be in keeping with your reasonable understanding of how they function.

So--can anyone tell me how deeply into the ground that would pulverize through how many floors of concrete etc?

The 2000 pounders (which I heard they were using) are good for about 100 feet of earth or 20 feet of concrete. At least that's what I have been told.

I seem to recall an explanation that bunker busters count the successive shocks as they penetrate floors and can be programmed to detonate after a set number of floors or after coming to rest, whichever happens first.

That makes sense as well, in other words.... It's not much different then how a Tri-Burst select-fire trigger works on a M-16......... a ratcheting trigger
